New Kids on the Block - NKOTB or New Kids for short - are an American pop group from Boston , Massachusetts , founded in 1984 , which was celebrated internationally as a pop phenomenon in the late 1980s and early 1990s and was one of the highest-paid entertainers in the world . Called a teen band at the time , they are now considered the prototype of successful boy groups and were models for subsequent formations in the 1990s such as Take That , Caught in the Act , Backstreet Boys , * NSYNC and Boyzone . The group split in 1994 and has been back in the music business since 2008. New Kids on the Block have sold over 80 million records worldwide and to date hold the record in merchandising sales with annual sales of $ 1 billion.

Band history

1984: foundation

With the aim of finding five white young people who would interpret rhythm and blues and become idols of their age group, the producer of New Edition , Maurice Starr, decided to set up a new group in the summer of 1984. His talent scout Mary Alford first discovered the then 14-year-old Donnie Wahlberg (born August 17, 1969), who stood out from other boys of his age due to his self-confident demeanor and his rap and breakdance skills. It was also Wahlberg who met his brother Mark (born June 5, 1971), his friend Danny Wood (born May 14, 1969) and his former schoolmates Jonathan (born November 29, 1968) and Jordan Knight (born May 17, 1970) brought to the studio. They all mastered breakdancing and had sung in school and church choirs for years. They had also grown up in Boston working-class neighborhoods with a high proportion of African American youth. Starr saw this as a plus, given his ambition to have black music presented by whites. After the first rehearsals, however, the then only 13-year-old decided to get out of the project. He was replaced by Donnie Wahlberg's friend Jamie Kelley.

1985–1987: The first years

Under the name Nynuk , the band made their first appearance in May 1985 in front of 400 students at Lee High School in Boston. This was followed by an appearance at the Kite Festival in Franklin Park, during which the group had to dance on arranged tables, whistled and pelted with stones.

While the other four members spent all their free time in the studio and committed themselves to the further development of the band, Kelley increasingly neglected his commitment and was excluded from the group in June 1985. His place was taken by the then 12-year-old Joey McIntyre (born December 31, 1972). With the new addition, the band changed their name to New Kids on the Block , due to the title of a rap that Wahlberg had produced with Starr.

The group gave their first concert as New Kids on the Block in the Deer Island prison in Boston harbor in front of several hundred prisoners. This was followed by appearances in various clubs that were primarily attended by blacks.

In 1986 the band got their first record deal with Columbia Records . The self-titled debut album New Kids on the Block and the single Be my girl , which was released, did not make it into the charts. The media and radio took no notice of them. Regardless of the failure, they appeared in the opening act of various bands in 1986 and finally completed a concert at the Apollo Theater in New York City in 1987 , in which they were frenetically celebrated by the audience that was considered difficult.

1988–1992: breakthrough and zenith of success

Donnie Wahlberg (left) and Jordan Knight (right), Grammy Awards 1990

Their breakthrough came in 1988 with the release of their second album Hangin 'Tough . The single Please Don't Go Girl jumped from zero to number 10 in the US charts. At the same time they accompanied the then 16-year-old singer Tiffany, who was very popular among young people, as a support act on her tour of the USA. Euphoria broke out and the opening act became the main actors. The music broadcaster MTV began to broadcast the follow-up single You Got It (The Right Stuff) in heavy rotation , the band was invited to all major TV shows on US television and filled all teenage magazines.

As part of its role model function for millions of young people, the group was particularly committed to anti-drug campaigns. In recognition of this commitment, the then governor of the state of Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis , awarded the band the highest honor in the city of Boston by declaring April 24, 1989 New Kids on the Block Day . In June 1989, New Kids on the Block toured and played in sold-out houses across the country. Wherever the group appeared, they were besieged by hysterical fans. At the same time, her single I´ll Be Loving You Forever and a few months later her album Hangin´ Tough reached number one in the charts. The latter went platinum eight times . Due to the enormous success, their debut album from 1986 was re-released and went triple platinum. Their third album Merry Merry Christmas, also released in 1989, and the double platinum single This one´s for the children , which was released from it, was followed by a sold out Christmas tour through the USA. The group donated the proceeds from the single to the United Cerebral Palsy organization , which supports people with cerebral palsy .

In January 1990, New Kids on the Block received two American Music Awards for Best Pop Group and Best Pop Album . Their stadium tour through the USA and Europe with a tripled security team in the spring of 1990 was followed by the release of the album Step by Step , which entered the charts at number one in countries such as the USA , UK and Germany and reached around twenty million worldwide Times sold. The subsequent Magic Summer Tour took them in the summer of 1990 through 63 American stadiums with a total of over two million spectators. The band was one of the most popular in the world at this time, the hysteria of the fans was often compared to the hysteria of the Beatles fans. The fan club received 30,000 letters a day and the official hotline received over 100,000 calls a week. In addition, the band has received numerous audience awards, including the Bravo Otto in Gold in 1990 and 1991 and eleven trophies from the former British youth magazine Smash Hits . In the further course, a diverse selection of merchandising items was produced, from clothing and jewelry to everyday decorations and utensils to dolls from the toy manufacturer Hasbro . In 1990 alone, the group had a billion dollar sales of its merchandise. One of the animated series, which the band thematized, ran in September 1990 on the ABC channel and in March 1992 on RTL plus . In a 2001 interview, Jonathan Knight later admitted that when the members were still young, they were unaware of the machinery they had triggered with just one signature. In October 1990, No More Games was the fifth album.

NKOTB dolls, Hard Rock Cafe , Boston

The ongoing hysteria among fans also led to strong rejection. As idols adored by young girls, the quintet has been repeatedly ridiculed by music magazines beyond the youth press. In view of their age, they were called, among other things, "milk tooth rockers" and their following as "pubescent virgins" and "generation of braces". In everyday situations, the members were also confronted with aggressive behavior and death threats. A T-shirt that said New Kids under the Block featured a boulder with several bleeding legs depicted under it. The Knight brothers were threatened with a loaded gun in the street. Danny Wood's house was shot at.

In January 1991, New Kids on the Block was ranked # 1 of the highest paid entertainers in the world by Forbes Magazine for $ 115 million and appeared during the halftime show at the 21st Super Bowl in Tampa, Florida. Special programs were broadcast, youth magazines all over the world and serious newspapers such as Newsweek reported for pages on the pop phenomenon . In May 1991 the group received its own memorial in Vienna. Together with artists such as Sting and Peter Gabriel , they performed in the national stadium in Santiago de Chile in October 1991 in front of 75,000 spectators as the main group at two concerts organized by Amnesty International in order to gain the interest and support of young people for the human rights organization. The group also used its popularity in other ways to make young people in particular aware of dangers such as AIDS and drugs . They advocated safe sex and encouraged their fans to complete their schooling. While parents and youth protectionists in particular endorsed this behavior, opponents criticized it in a negative form as a “clean man image”.

New Kids on the Block in January 2009

From March 1991 the New Kids toured again through Europe , Japan and Australia . More than 1000 first aid missions per concert were regularly reported, there were bruises, bruises, fainting spells, broken ribs and even occasional cardiac arrests. As in previous years, tumultuous scenes in halls, hotels and airports accompanied the arrival, presence and departure of the band. The safety of the group as well as the safety of the fans became more and more of a serious problem. For the first time, it was considered whether live performances would still be justifiable under such conditions. They played an average of two hundred concerts a year.

When former employee Greg McPherson began in January 1992, the rumor that group do not sing live, broke New Kids on the Block their tour of Australia and flew 14 hours from Sydney to Los Angeles , in order Arsenio Hall Show to Take a stand against allegations. After the interview and their live performance, with which they provided the public with evidence to the contrary, they flew back to Sydney to end the tour there. Shortly afterwards, in Melbourne they were the first band to receive the Golden Key, the city's highest award after the Beatles . Her new single If You Go Away was released that same month .

On February 17, 1992, during a concert in front of 16,000 spectators in the Olympic Park in Seoul , South Korea , a mass panic broke out . Hundreds of visitors tried to storm the stage and were kicked to the ground. The band, who watched the incident from the stage, stopped the concert after the third song and was escorted back to the hotel . Fifty injured had to be taken to hospitals. At the hotel, the group was informed that they would not be allowed to leave the country if they did not finish the concert as contracted. South Korean armed forces then occupied all passages and rows of the Olympic Park and the concert continued under military protection. It wasn't until the next day that members learned that a 17-year-old fan had died in hospital as a result of his injuries. Shocked, the group ended their live activities in April 1992 and withdrew despite the demonstrations by fans and the “rescue operations” initiated by teenage magazines. A few months later, the magazine NKOTB Spezial appeared in several issues in Germany .

1994: separation

Due to contractual obligations with the record company, which required the production of another album, New Kids on the Block came back to the studio in the summer of 1993. Her song Keep On Smiling for the film Free Willy appeared on the soundtrack of the same name . Now separated from Maurice Starr, they released their last album Face the Music and the singles Dirty Dawg and Never Let You Go in January 1994 . In the meantime they have grown up and tried to shed their previously clean teenage image, but the comeback could not build on the old successes due to the grunge music style that had become popular in the USA and Germany at the time. In southern countries such as Spain , on the other hand, they were more popular. The group finally split in 1994, not least because Jonathan Knight had already decided to leave the band for health reasons.

The years after that

  • Joey McIntyre played in musicals on Broadway and Off-Broadway and is active as a solo artist. He has already released seven albums with Stay The Same , Meet Joe Mac , One Too Many , 8:09 , Talk to Me , Here we go again and Come Home For Christmas . In the series Boston Public he was seen as a teacher Colin Flynn. He is married and has three children.
  • Jordan Knight achieved gold status in the USA with his solo debut of the same name in 1999, his single Give It to You climbed to number 10 in the charts and was awarded platinum . Health impairments followed. With Unfinished he has now released his fifth album after a New Kids on the Block remix album, The Fix and Love Songs . In 2014 he toured the United States with Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys as the duo Nick & Knight. You have released an album of the same name. Knight is married and has two sons.
  • Danny Wood initially worked as a producer for other artists, but later released a number of his own albums: D-Fuse: Room Full Of Smoke (1999), D-Wood: Room Full Of Smoke Vol. 2 (2003), Second Face (2003), OFD: Originally From Dorchester (Acoustic Tour Exclusive) (2003), Coming Home (2008) and Stronger: Remember Betty (2009). Wood is divorced and has four children, two births and two adopted.
  • Jonathan Knight fell seriously ill after the breakup and withdrew completely from show business. Until the reunification in 2008 he worked as a real estate agent. In January 2011 , singer Tiffany inadvertently outed him as homosexual on a television show.

The attempt by the American TV show Bands Reunited to bring the group back together for a joint performance failed in 2004 due to the refusal of individual members.

reunion

2008: The Block

New Kids on the Block in January 2008

The online edition of People magazine reported on January 27, 2008 that the band was apparently planning a comeback as the official NKOTB website was back in use. As a result, the site received a million hits within a week. On April 2, 2008, NKOTB.com finally confirmed the reunion and announced the release of a new album and a tour.

On May 13, 2008, the band released their first single in 14 years, Summertime, in the US . Three days later they presented the song live for the first time on the American television program Today Show . In Germany, the CD single was scheduled to be released on August 29, 2008, but at that time the title was only available for purchase by download. The CD single was finally released at the same time as the album The Block on September 12, 2008. The album debuted at number 21 in the German album charts, while the single Summertime made it to number 55 on the Media Control single charts. The album, which included collaborations with Ne-Yo , the Pussycat Dolls and Lady Gaga , was particularly successful in the USA and Canada. In the US, it reached number two on the Billboard 200 and number one on the pop albums chart. In Canada the album debuted at number one and was awarded gold.

As part of the filming of Til Schweiger's medieval comedy 1½ Knights - In Search of the Adorable Herzelinde , New Kids on the Block were in Germany in July 2008 to make their guest appearance. The title Dirty Dancing sung there was released on December 19, 2008 as the second single from the album on CD. Even before that, the song was able to position itself in the German single charts through purely online sales. Under the title All together again on one stage , the group started a tour through the USA and Canada in autumn 2008, with an average audience of 20,000 visitors per evening. The opening concerts in Toronto, New York and Boston were sold out within minutes. In January and February 2009 she went on tour to Europe, which in turn was followed by another tour through the USA, this time with a new stage show entitled Full Service . As part of their 2010 tour CasiNO , they performed on three consecutive evenings at the Radio City Music Hall in New York, with the Backstreet Boys among others .

2010–2012: NKOTBSB: Collaboration with the Backstreet Boys

New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys in New York 2011

Due to the audience response, the idea of a joint musical project developed from this performance. As part of the American Music Awards 2010, both groups presented themselves as NKOTBSB for the first time with a choreographed show in which some of their respective hits were interwoven. On the occasion of the traditional New Year's Eve celebration, a second appearance followed in front of about a million people in New York's Times Square . With Don't Turn Out the Lights , NKOTBSB released their first joint single in December 2010, which reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 . A compilation followed in May 2011, each containing five hits from the two bands as well as two new titles and a mashup . The album debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 and reached number six in Canada. Under the title One night - One stage - Once in a lifetime , the two groups went on a world tour together from June 2011 to May 2012; they made guest appearances in the historic Fenway Park in Boston. On April 29, 2012 one of their concerts from the O₂Arena in London was broadcast live in 400 cinemas in Europe and worldwide via stream .

After the end of the joint tour, New Kids on the Block played their South America & Mexico tour with 10 concerts in August and September of the same year .

In 2010 the DVD Coming Home was released , which shows recordings of concerts and interviews since the beginning of the reunification.

2013: Album 10 and The Package Tour

Almost five years after The Block , NKOTB released the single Remix (I Like The) in January 2013 , followed by their studio album 10 in April 2013 . It debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 .

NKOTB has been touring North America under the title The Package since May 2013, with Boyz II Men and 98 Degrees serving as opening acts . On May 30, 2013, New Kids on the Block performed with Aerosmith and other musicians at the Boston Strong benefit concert at TD Garden , held for the victims and survivors of the Boston Marathon attack . Joey McIntyre had taken part in the marathon himself as a runner and had reached the goal just minutes before the bombing.

Trivia

  • During a concert in Manchester, UK in the spring of 1990, Danny Wood fell over a stuffed animal thrown on stage by fans and broke his ankle in the process. The four other members had to end the European tour without him.
  • During her stay at the Intercontinental Hotel in Berlin , there was such a rush of fans that the room staff and cooks had to help with the barriers that were set up to hold the teenagers back. The pictures were broadcast on a news program.
  • Due to a rush of fans at a Spanish airport, the New Kids on the Block had to flee via a counter onto a baggage carousel and fell into a suitcase slot.
  • Joey McIntyre described the hysteria as "animalistic" in a later interview. Fans hid in garbage cans, laundry baskets or freight elevators, tried to overturn the tour bus, threw themselves on the roofs and hoods of their moving cars, stuck their clothes, camped in front of private houses, rang the doorbell day and night, took photos of the rooms from nearby Trees and tore pieces of lawn and similar "souvenirs" from the property.
  • During a concert, experts found "that the screeching of the fans drowned out the volume of a jet fighter starting 10 m away".
  • In Vienna , the group was erected a monument in the form of a microphone with protruding heads, which was unveiled on May 2, 1991 by the then mayor Helmut Zilk on the Danube Island . After strangers damaged the sculpture by removing the heads, it had to move in front of the Wiener Stadthalle . However, it was no longer erected in the course of renovation work in 1999, according to media reports it may have been lost.
  • With their single If you go away , New Kids on the Block are number one of the most successful BRAVO hits of all time. The title stayed in the BRAVO charts for more than two years without a break.
  • Coinciding with the day of her first appearance on the Today Show on May 16, 2008, the server on the official website went down due to overload.
