Step by Step is a song written by Maurice Starr in 1986. The best-known version comes from the US boy band New Kids on the Block from 1990. With over 6.5 million records sold worldwide, the song is the group's most successful single .
Emergence
In 1986 Starr produced an album for The Superiors . The recording studio was booked, but Starr hadn't written a song yet. He started playing the keyboard ten minutes before recording began , and the melody sounded like footsteps to him. So he called the piece Step by Step (German: step by step ). The song was released as a single by Motown , but did not hit the charts.
The version of New Kids on the Block was released on May 10, 1990 as the first single from the album of the same name in the USA and entered the Billboard Hot 100 charts at number 27 two weeks later . A month later, the song stayed at number 1 for three weeks and stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for a total of 15 weeks, reaching platinum status in October 1990 . Step by Step was also awarded platinum in the Canadian charts, where the single was at number 1 for two weeks . In Europe, Step by Step reached number two in the UK Top 40 and was also among the top ten in Germany , France and Norway .
