TVXQ (Chinese: Tong Vfang Xien Qi, Japanese: Tohoshinki, Korean: Dong Bang Shin Ki - DBSK The Rising Gods of the East ) is one of the most successful five-piece boy bands from South Korea . Similar to BoA and Shinhwa, she was discovered in a talent competition run by the South Korean label SM Entertainment. In 2008 they received an entry in the Guinness Book of Records for the largest fan club, called Cassiopeia , with 800,000 official members in Korea alone (as of 2008).

Band history

2003–2005: debut

On December 26, 2003, TVXQ made their first appearance on a joint show by BoA and Britney Spears . They sang their debut single "Hug" and an a cappella version of " O Holy Night " with BoA. In January 2004 her debut single "Hug" was released. With the sale of a total of 169,532 copies and 4th place in the monthly charts, the single became one of the 14 best-selling records of the year. Her second single "The Way U Are" (July 2004) entered the charts at number 2 and became one of the 9 best-selling records of the year with 214,069 records sold. TVXQ released their first album, Tri-Angle, in October 2004. It went straight to the top of the charts and placed 8th in the annual charts with 242,580 copies sold.

In April 2005, TVXQ debuted in Japan with the Avex subsidiary label Rhythm Zone with the single "Stay with Me Tonight". After they had also released their second Japanese single, "Somebody to Love", they returned to South Korea back and released their second Korean album Rising Sun . Rising Sun immediately topped the charts and became one of the four best-selling records in 2005 with 222,472 copies. TVXQ closed the year with their third Japanese single "My Destiny" and with Super Junior , who are also under contract with SM Entertainment, with the Korean single "Show Me Your Love". The latter was immediately at the top of the charts and landed at number 35 in the annual charts with 49,945 copies. At the end of the year, TVXQ received the "Best Music Video Award" for "Rising Sun" and the "People's Choice Award" at the Mnet KM Music Video Festival 2005.

2006–2007: advance in Asia

In 2006 TVXQ started their first international tour: Rising Sun 1st Asia Tour . In addition to South Korea, she also worked in China, Thailand and Malaysia, which made her the first ever Korean artist to give a concert in Malaysia. In March, the band released their fourth Japanese single "Asu wa Kuru Kara" ( 明日 は 来 る か ら ) and a little later their first Japanese album Heart, Mind and Soul . The album debuted at number 25 on the weekly Oricon charts with 9,554 copies sold . Their fifth Japanese single "Rising Sun / Heart, Mind and Soul" a month later rose to number 22 on the Oricon Singles Chart. To promote their album, TVXQ held their first Japan tour 1st Live Tour 2006: Heart, Mind and Soul from May to June. TVXQ release two more Japanese singles, "Begin" and "Sky". The latter rose to number 6 on the charts, making it the first single in the group to make it into the top ten of the Oricon charts. In the summer of 2006, TVXQ performed for the first time at the annual Avex A-Nation open-air festival .

With their third Korean album "O" -Jung.Ban.Hap. ("O" - 正. 反. 合., Literally "O" -These.Antithesis.Synthesis) (September 2006) they resumed their Korean activities. Like their two previous albums, "O" -Jung.Ban.Hap jumped. with 349,317 copies sold to the top of the charts and became the best-selling record in 2006. Two months after the release of "O" -Jung.Ban.Hap , the group released their eighth Japanese single "Miss You /" O "- Sei-Han- Gō "(miss you /" O "- 正 ・ 反 ・ 合 ) and made it to number 3 on the Oricon charts, making them the band's first top 5 hit. At the MKMF Music Festival 2006 TVXQ received a total of four awards: "Best Artist of the Year", "Best Group", "Mnet.com" and "Mnet Plus Mobile People's Choice Award". At the 16th Music Seoul Festival, TVXQ won three awards including a "Daesang" award. At the 21st Golden Disk Awards in 2006, TVXQ received both a "Daesang" and the coveted "Bonsang". TVXQ also received a "Daesang" and a "Bonsang" at the SBS Gayo Awards 2006.

TVXQ started 2007 with their Japanese single "Step by Step" and their second sold-out international tour The 2nd Asia Tour Concert 'O' . Stops were Seoul , Taipei , Bangkok , Kuala Lumpur , Shanghai and Beijing . In March, TVXQ released their tenth Japanese single "Choosey Lover" and their second Japanese album Five in the Black . Both were in the top 10 of their respective charts, the single at number 9 and the album at number 10. In May, the band participated in the MTV Video Music Awards Japan and won the "Best Buzz Asia in Korea" award for their album "O" -Jung.Ban.Hap. By the end of 2007, TVXQ released five more singles: "Lovin 'You", "Summer: Summer Dream / Song for You / Love in the Ice", "Shine / Ride On", "Forever Love" and "Together". "Summer: Summer Dream / Song for You / Love in the Ice" reached # 2 on the Oricon Weekly Charts, making it the group's top-ranked Japanese single at the time. Together with label colleague Kumi Koda , TVXQ recorded the single "Last Angel", which was used as the title track for Resident Evil: Extinction .

From 2008: Increasing success in Japan and return to South Korea

TVXQ live at SM Town Live in Bangkok

TVXQ released their 16th Japanese single Purple Line on January 16, 2008. This rose to number 1 on the Oricon Daily Charts, making it the band's first number one hit. Some time later, their third Japanese album T came on the market, which debuted at number 4 on the Oricon Weekly Album Charts. THSK's record label Rhythm Zone announced the Trick project: a project that would release five singles in a row over six weeks (February to March). Each of these five singles contains a solo by a band member and picks up on a theme from the song Trick on the title track . In April THSK released their 23rd single Beautiful You / Sennen Koi Uta . The single became another number 1 hit for the band, making them the first non-Japanese band to have two number 1 hits. In doing so, they had broken the record set by Ou-Yang Fei Fei 24 years ago.

On June 12th, TVXQ finished their '2nd Asia Tour' in Beijing, which had been running since February 23, 2007. After the successful completion of their tour, THSK released their 24th single: Dōshite Kimi o Suki ni Natte Shimattandarō? Like its previous singles, the single topped the Oricon charts and made TVXQ one of the first foreign artists with three number one hits of all time. Also in 2008 they took part in the popular A-Nation Festival and appeared alongside greats like Ayumi Hamasaki or Koda Kumi. In August TVXQ returned to South Korea to attend SMTown Live '08 . Here they played with label colleagues BoA, Cheon Sang Ji Hee the Grace , Zhang Liyin , Girls' Generation , Shinee or Super Junior.

The fourth Korean album Mirotic should be released on September 24th and make the big comeback after a break of almost two years in Korea. However, due to the immense number of pre-orders, there was a two-day delay. Even after the long creative break, they managed to top the charts with Mirotic with 307,974 copies sold. In January 2009 the number of records sold amounted to 502,837, which made Mirotic the first Korean album in six years, which had exceeded the 500,000 mark and a very successful comeback of the five Koreans proved. In October, TVXQ released Jumon: Mirotic , the Japanese version of the Korean theme song of the same name. The single also topped the Oricon charts in Japan, breaking the record that the band had set with their last single. On January 31, 2008, TVXQ took part in Kōhaku Uta Gassen , an extremely renowned music show in Japan that is only stocked with the creme-de-la-creme of the Japanese music scene. TVXQ was the first ever Korean band to be honored to take part in this annual show.

In January 2009 TVXQ started with their 25th single Bolero / Kiss the Baby Sky / Wasurenaide , which again claimed number 1 on the Oricon charts. In March they released their 26th single Survivor and their 4th Japanese album The Secret Code , which entered the album charts at number 2. Survivor climbed to 3rd place on the Oricon charts and so their record ended for the time being. On April 22nd, 2009 they released their 27th single Share the World / We Are! out, which became known as the new opening of the anime One Piece and brought them first place in the charts. Their 28th single, Stand by U , released on July 1st , has sold over 300,000 copies by July 6th, as has their 4th Japanese album. In order to perfect their triple three of the music scene, they have attracted over 300,000 music lovers with their 東方 神 起4th Live Tour 2009 The Secret Code , which began in May . Your last stop for this was in the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo.

After releasing their best-of album and the 30th single 時 ヲ 止 メ テ / Toki wo Tomete , the band announced on April 3 that they would stop all activities in Japan and that the five members would devote themselves to their solo careers. Surprisingly, however, it was reported on April 15th that three members - Jaejoong, Yuchun and Junsu - are forming a new group, with which they performed both in June in the Kyocera DOME in Osaka and in the Tokyo DOME. It shouldn't just be a limited project, but rather the future formation of the band.

In November 2010 the film Kimi ga Odoru Natsu will be released , for which Tohoshinki taxed the title song, which was sold as a DVD version including a cinema ticket in July, even if a single release is not planned.

In August 2010 it was announced that Junsu, Jaejoong and Yuchun, who had come together as the group JYJ after their activities at Tohoshinki were discontinued , would release an album in Japan.
