Korean Broadcasting System ( KBS ) is a South Korean broadcaster that operates several radio and television programs . It is the oldest public broadcaster in South Korea and the largest.

KBS headquarters in Seoul

structure

KBS is a 'public-law' institution which, regulated by law , receives public funds from the South Korean government , but is to be run independently. However, the general manager is appointed by the government. In protest against the interference of the Presidential Office under Park Geun-hye in matters of the station, KBS reporters went on strike on May 19, 2014 and demanded the resignation of the artistic director Gil Hwan-young, who refused to do so. On May 22nd, thirteen senior program directors also went on strike after their resignation requests were unsuccessful.

KBS receives around 37.3% of its income from collecting television fees. The monthly television fee is 2,500 won . The greater part, namely 39.8% of the income comes from the sale of advertising time. KBS also receives funding from the government for state programs such as the international radio service (Radio Korea International, part of KBS World Radio).
