Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting ( IRIB ; Persian سازمان صدا و سيمای جمهوری اسلامی ايران; German: Broadcasting of the Islamic Republic of Iran ) is the state broadcasting company of the Islamic Republic of Iran , based in Tehran . It is subject to state censorship and under Article 110 of the Iranian Constitution is subordinate to the highest legal scholar . IRIB is classified by scientists and journalists as a propaganda tool of the Iranian government.

In its German radio program, the station describes itself as the "Voice of the Islamic Republic of Iran".

Program and classification

The radio company operates several radio and television stations in Iran. In the field of international television, IRIB operates four foreign-language channels: Arabic Al-Alam (since 2003), English-language Press TV (since 2007), Spanish-language Hispan TV (since 2012) and the English and Arabic channel iFilm , the Iranian feature films shows. In Europe, for example, IRIB programs could be received via the Hot Bird 3 satellite, including the foreign TV channels IRIB 1 and IRIB 2 as well as Press TV. In 2005, the French state media company banned the Hotbird Group from broadcasting Sahar TV, which is subordinate to IRIB, because of an anti-Semitic film series. In July 2013, several satellite operators banned the stations from the western satellites because of their function as state propaganda stations.

IRIB broadcasts a foreign radio program worldwide in several languages. Languages currently include: Russian, Arabic, Hebrew, English, French, German, Turkish, Chinese, Kurdish, Italian, Japanese, and Indonesian. There are also news from IRIB on the Internet in various languages, as well as audio and video live streams.

The English section of IRIB began in 1956 with the aim of introducing various countries around the world to the history and culture of Iran. This also included the different regions of Iran and historical sites.

Function after the Islamic Revolution

With the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979, IRIB was directly subordinate to the leader of the revolution and, according to the statutes, has the task of fighting the enemies of the Islamic revolution “in the interests of protecting and continuing the revolution”. Accordingly, IRIB regularly brings prisoners of the Islamic Republic of Iran before confessions obtained through torture and carries out propaganda for terrorist organizations in the Middle East. The reporting is riddled with anti-American and anti-Zionist to anti-Semitic comments. For example, the Holocaust is regularly denied in various programs .

As a result of state control, the voice of the Iranian opposition is barely presented.

The German-speaking interview partners from IRIB include Willy Wimmer , Christoph Hörstel , Gerhard Wisnewski , Felicia Langer , Andreas von Bülow , Peter Scholl-Latour , Udo Steinbach , Götz Neuneck , Shraga Elam , Sabine Schiffer and Elias Davidsson .

On the occasion of an invitation from ARD and ZDF to the then IRIB boss Ezzatollah Zarghami , the Iranian politician in exile Mehran Barati criticized in 2010 that IRIB was not a “conservative” television, but “one of the secret service and the coercive apparatus”. According to various opposition groups, Zarghami himself was involved in the 1979 hostage-taking of Tehran . Even Reporters Without Borders criticized the reception of the most important representatives of the Iranian state radio: "The state radio is an instrument of propaganda, manipulation and repression of the first rank. After a year of massive censorship and persecution in Iran, the meeting sends the wrong signal to the victims of state repression. "

Head of the IRIB

The head of the IRIB is appointed directly by the Iranian revolutionary leader for a period of 5 years.
