Press TV is an Iranian foreign television broadcaster in English that has been operated by the state-run broadcasting company Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) since 2007 . Like the entire Iranian state radio, the broadcaster reports to the highest state and revolutionary leader, Ali Khamene'i . According to the head of the Iranian international broadcaster Mohammad Sarafraz, the program is intended to “give Western viewers a second eye”.

Press TV is also broadcast under the name News TV without scrolling text ( crawling title ) .

history

Press TV went on air on July 3, 2007 with around 400 employees and 26 correspondents. The station's website has existed since January 2007. The station was criticized for its anti-Israeli and sometimes anti-Semitic reporting. After the Iranian-Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari was arrested in Tehran in 2009, who had reported on demonstrations against the controversial re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and who claims to have been tortured and forced to give an interview, the British media supervision Office of Communications (Ofcom) investigated the case. As a result, the broadcasting license in the United Kingdom was withdrawn after an initially imposed fine was not paid.

On April 3, 2012, the broadcaster announced that, at the instigation of the Bavarian State Center for New Media, it would no longer be broadcast by the SES Astra satellites because it had no broadcasting license for Europe. The broadcaster described the action as "illegal" and "part of the West's plan to silence the broadcaster". After an urgent application from Press TV , the broadcaster was initially allowed to continue broadcasting, but the BLM was examining the extent to which "media law rules comparable to those in Germany apply" in Iran. According to a spokesman for the BLM, the ban on satellite broadcasting should at least continue to exist: "For the satellite uplink of a non-European broadcasting program, you need a broadcasting license from a European regulatory authority," because the Ofcom license is no longer applicable and the legal situation is no longer applicable "In this case unambiguous". With the withdrawal of Ofcom's approval, “the German cable license also expired.” On September 11, 2012, the Bavarian Administrative Court changed the urgent decision of the lower court and confirmed the immediate execution of the BLM's decision. After a notice board was initially displayed, the transmission slot is now used by Joiz .

As of July 1, 2013, Eutelsat and Intelsat stopped broadcasting 19 IRIB programs. The foreign broadcasters Press TV, Hispan TV (Spanish), IRIB 1 and 2 as well as IFilm (international films in Persian and Arabic) and IFilm English (English dubbed Iranian film productions) were affected. Since March 24, 2014, the IRIB programs have been broadcast via Eutelsat again.

The reason for the shutdown is given by the IRIBs as the sanctions policy of the European Union and the United States against Iran. The French-Israeli managing director Eutelsats Michel de Rosen tried to link the sanctions against Iran with the media sanctions against Iran and to win over other satellite providers. However, the spokesman for EU foreign policy Michael Mann had told Press TV that the EU sanctions against Iran do not include the media.
