The full name of the operating company is Nueva Televisión del Sur CA.

concept

Fidel Castro's idea of founding a kind of “Latin American CNN ” was later taken up and implemented by the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez . The station sees itself as a channel for the integration of Latin America and is intended as a counterweight to the private US television stations CNN and Univision , as well as the British BBC . The station does not serve any profit-oriented purpose.

structure

  • Countries involved in teleSUR
  • President Patricia Villegas has been with the station since the year it was founded. Among other things, she worked as a presenter and news editor-in-chief. The formal vice-president is the Uruguayan journalist Aram Aharonian. However, he has been resting this office since the end of 2007 due to internal conflicts. The broadcaster's headquarters are in Caracas . He is supported by correspondents from Bogotá , Brasília , Buenos Aires , Mexico City , Havana , Montevideo , La Paz and Washington as well as employees in other cities.

The advisory board includes distinguished Latin American and international intellectuals such as Nobel Prize winner Adolfo Maria Pérez Esquivel , the poet and former culture minister of the Sandinista government of Nicaragua , Ernesto Cardenal , the writers Eduardo Galeano and Tariq Ali , the historian Ignacio Ramonet , the actor Danny Glover and the programmer Richard Stallman .

TeleSUR is a stock corporation whose shareholders are the governments of the seven member countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Uruguay and Venezuela). The majority of the shares are held by Venezuela.

In August 2008, the information ministers of Paraguay and Venezuela, Efraín Alegre and Andrés Izarra , signed a letter of intent according to which Fernando Lugo's government, which had taken office the day before, would gradually participate in the station. Paraguay is the eighth member state of teleSUR.

    Cooperations

Brazil contributes to the project in terms of content and technology on a smaller scale, but is not involved beyond that because the country is pursuing its own project with TV Brasil . In Brazil, teleSUR broadcasts the program with Portuguese subtitles. Part of the program is also broadcast in Portuguese .

In January 2006 teleSUR and the Arab broadcaster Al Jazeera agreed on a collaboration. The agreement provides for the exchange of program content and experience in training journalists and television technicians. There is a cooperation agreement with the Argentine state news agency Télam . Both media promise to exchange messages in various formats. In a letter of intent signed on June 3, 2007, TeleSUR pledged to help the state of Nicaragua establish a public television broadcaster . TeleSUR is helping Ecuador set up Ecuador TV , the country's first public television broadcaster, which began broadcasting on November 29, 2007. The broadcaster, whose reception is initially limited to the capital Quito , also takes over programs from teleSUR.

    Content

The 24-hour broadcasting consists mainly of news programs, analyzes, chronicles, reports, interviews and documentaries. The aim is a better representation of specific Latin American topics in the international media as well as the promotion of the integration of Latin America through the presentation of the common history and values. In addition to reporting on current events (around 40 percent of broadcast time), the focus is on topics from art, culture, history, geography and nature. TeleSUR is intended to act as a counterweight to the US private broadcasters CNN and Univisión Communications (Univision) in Latin America .

    criticism

Prior to the commencement of broadcasting feared critic for the secured mainly by the Venezuelan government financing that the transmitter primarily as a mouthpiece for the Bolivarian revolution of Hugo Chavez minister, and therefore referred to him derisively as TeleChavez . The terms “CNN of the South” and “Al-Bolívar”, based on the Arab news channel Al Jazeera , could also be read. Due to fears of a tendency towards anti-US American reporting by the station, the US government authorities considered broadcasting a counter-program and possibly also the use of interfering signals.

After the conclusion of a cooperation agreement between teleSUR and the Al Jazeera television station, Connie Mack, a member of the US House of Representatives, stated that the agreement would serve to create a "global television station for terrorists", which in view of the bombing of the Al Jazeera offices in Kabul (2001) and Baghdad (2003) raised concerns by the US Air Force in the Venezuelan Information Department that TeleSur's headquarters in Caracas would be another possible target in a bombing by the US.

The Colombian government accuses the broadcaster of tendentious reporting on the armed conflict between the Colombian government and the FARC .

The station's vice president, Aram Aharonian, sharply criticized the station's management in an interview in December 2008. He accused her of copying the US television channel CNN. Many employees have a CNN mentality and the employees who think their job is more than just making a living are very isolated. Referring to the cancellation of the program “Agenda del Sur”, which was seen most frequently in the morning, he said that there are very good people at TeleSur who got to the bottom of the subject, but are now powerless and no longer have a slot. The best people would have left the station. TeleSur is run by incompetent and counter-revolutionaries in the broadest sense of the word. To change the station, he would have to part with 250 of his 450 employees. It is not okay if the Minister of Information of Venezuela is also President of the station and runs it at will (Minister of Information Andrés Izarra was also President of teleSUR). The Directory is never called together and can be changed if the Minister wanted to. TeleSur should be a multi-state company, but in reality it is a Venezuelan company. He also criticized the fact that TeleSur only relies on information broadcasts.

In February 2012, the Cuba correspondent for the Arab news channel Al Jazeera, Moutaz al-Qaissia , drew attention to the fact that TeleSur's Middle East correspondent, Hisham Wannous , was also working as an official interpreter for the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad , which raises serious questions about the station's journalistic professionalism. In photos of Assad's state visits to Cuba and Venezuela in June 2010, which were published on the President's website, Wannous can be seen as the official interpreter at Assad's side during talks with Presidents Raúl Castro and Hugo Chávez.
