Eduardo Galeano
Eduardo Hughes Galeano (born September 3, 1940 in Montevideo , Uruguay , † April 13, 2015 ibid) was a Uruguayan journalist , essayist and writer .
Life
At the age of 20 Galeano became deputy editor-in-chief of Marcha , a magazine for culture and politics in Montevideo. He later worked as a manager for several left-wing magazines. In 1973 he was arrested and had to emigrate to Argentina, where he became editor-in-chief of the magazine Crisis . When the military seized power there too, he went into exile in Spain in 1976 , where he published the trilogy Memoria del Fuego in 1984 . He stayed here until the end of the civil- military dictatorship in Uruguay in 1985.
In 1971 the first version of his work Las venas abiertas de América Latina (Eng. The Open Veins of Latin America ) was published, which deals with the history of Latin America , in particular the colonial rule of the old and more recent, and was banned in Uruguay, Argentina and Chile.
Galeano was considered one of the literary spokesmen for the theory of dependence . However, he never saw himself as a proponent of a theory, but as the “poet of those down there”, the “common people” who told the story from the perspective of their victims. In recognition of this, he was awarded the Stig Dagerman Prize in 2010 . Galeano holds honorary doctorates from the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in La Paz , the University of Havana and the University of Neuquén (Argentina).
He died on April 13, 2015 at the age of 74 in his hometown of Montevideo of complications from lung cancer .
