The university was founded under the name Real y Pontificia Universidad de San Gerónimo de La Habana ( Royal and Papal University of St. Jerome to Havana ). The foundation was by Pope Innocent XIII. and King Philip V of Spain authorized.

In 1842 the university changed its status to a secular educational institution and changed its name to Real y Literaria Universidad de La Habana ( Royal and Literary University of Havana ). In later Republican times it was called Universidad Nacional ( National University ).

The university was first located on the site of the San Juan de Letrán Monastery in Habana Vieja , the historic old town. On May 1, 1902, the campus moved to a hill that the Habaneros knew as Aróstegui Hill, which is now known as University Hill. The Colegio Universitario de San Gerónimo , the faculty for monument protection affiliated to the university , has been residing in a new building on the original site in the old town since 2007 .

The interior of the Aula Magna de la Universidad de La Habana, where the remains of the Cuban thinker Félix Varela (1788-1853) lie, was designed by the Cuban artist Armando Menocal . The frescoes represent the first faculties of the university: medicine , science , art , thought , literature and law .

At the main entrance rises the rectorate with its neoclassical architecture, inspired by the Parthenon in Athens and between the rectorate and the grand staircase with 88 steps rises a bronze statue, the alma mater , symbol of the university, which welcomes the students with its open arms . The sculpture was created in 1919 by the Czech artist Mario Korbel . A young Cuban woman of 16 years, daughter of José Ramón Villalón y Sánchez , professor of mathematics and analytics, modeled the face . For the body, the artist took an older, Creole woman as a model.

At various times of the 20th century, the university had to limit or even stop its studies, which was due to the fact that the university's students and faculty had a long tradition of political activity. The law and economics faculties were particularly affected by this.

The university has an important stadium that hosts the traditional Caribbean Games , which have produced internationally renowned athletes. Following this sporting tradition, sport has been included in the curriculum for all faculties as a compulsory subject for at least two academic years.

The Rubén Martínez Villena main library was established in 1936.

With the law of August 11, 1919, enacted by the then President Mario García Menocal (1913–1921), the university received the right to award an honorary doctorate . In 1942 this was included in the statutes of the university and confirmed in 1960 after the victory of the revolution by the law on university reform.

The Law on the System of Honors and Honors (Law No. 17 of June 28, 1978) tacitly abolished all right to university honors, but it was so weak that it is still common in almost all universities in the country to this day To award honorary doctorates. During state visits in September 2011, for example, the President of Bolivia , Evo Morales , and in January 2012 his Iranian counterpart Mahmud Ahmadinejad both received honorary doctorates in political science in the Magna Aula of Havana University .

The university is headed by its rector, Gustavo Cobreiro Suárez, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba .

Education

The university currently consists of 15 faculties and 14 research centers in various fields such as economics , natural sciences , social sciences and humanities . Approximately 25,000 students are taught in 25 subject areas.

Exchange programs

Harvard University has been running an exchange program at the University of Havana since 2006 . This gives dozens of Harvard students and Cuban lecturers the opportunity to study abroad every year. In 2017, a new contract was signed to further expand scientific cooperation and educational exchange between Cuba and the United States. German universities also cooperate with the University of Havana. For example, students at the Institute for Romance Studies at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg have the opportunity to spend one or more semesters of their studies at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Havana. At the Humboldt-Universität Berlin, students of all subjects with the exception of medicine and law have the opportunity to study for one or two semesters at the University of Havana. Other German universities that cooperate with the University of Havana include the University of Cologne and the University of Kassel .
