Mario Josef Korbel (also Mario Joseph Korbel or Josef Mario Korbel ; born March 22, 1882 in Osík , Austria-Hungary , today the Czech Republic ; † March 31, 1954 in New York ) was a Czech sculptor and medalist .

Live and act

At the age of 17 he went to study in Prague without financial means . He went to the USA in 1900 but returned to Europe in 1905 to complete his studies in Berlin , Munich and Paris . In 1913 he moved to New York.

In the meantime, Korbel lived in Cuba for a few years , where he created the statue of the Alma Mater in front of the University of Havana in 1919 . During his Cuban days he also made a medal with the portrait of the third Cuban President Mario García Menocal . He also created a fountain for the garden of the presidential palace (now the Revolution Museum ) in Havana .

In 1944 Mario Korbel was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design in New York .
