The Universidad de Oriente ( Spanish for University of the East ) is a Cuban university in Santiago de Cuba .

history

The historical background of the university goes back to the year 1722, when the priestly college of San Basilio el Magno was founded in Santiago de Cuba . The city was one of the first seven settlements founded between 1514 and 1515 by the conqueror Diego Velázquez .

From 1819 there was approval for the establishment of a university in the eastern region of Cuba. The socio-cultural and colonial obstacles as well as the North American influence thwarted such a project. After the establishment of the republic in 1902, a new attempt was made to put this resolution into practice, which ultimately only took place on October 10, 1947, when the second institution of higher public education in the country was formed. In 1951, Law No. 13 of December 23, 1951 established that the University of the East was a public, democratic and autonomous center. This is how the second oldest university in Cuba was founded.
