The wagon factory P. Herbrand & Cie. in Cologne-Ehrenfeld was founded in September 1866 by Peter Herbrand, who was previously part of the management of the wagon manufacturer Talbot & Herbrand in Aachen . The production facilities were located between Venloer Strasse No. 427, Herbrandstrasse and the directly adjacent railway line , i.e. with a direct track connection to the Cologne – Aachen railway line . Today there is a restaurant in the premises.

Herbrand built freight , passenger and tram cars in normal and narrow gauge . The company's customers included state railways from German states (they mainly ordered mail and baggage cars ), from 1877 the Cologne horse-drawn railway operator Ernst Hardt , nearby small railway companies such as the Bergheimer Kreisbahn , the Geilenkirchener Kreisbahn and the Euskirchener Kreisbahnen , as well as tram operators from all over Germany and neighboring countries.

Herbrand manufactured, among other things, the mechanical parts of the first commercially operated tram railcars and trailer cars for the Mödling – Hinterbrühl local railway ( SB Tw 1–15 ) and the Frankfurt-Offenbacher Trambahn-Gesellschaft (FOTG). The electrical equipment for the FOTG railcars came from Siemens & Halske .

In 1881 a fire destroyed the factory halls; but these could soon be rebuilt. In 1889 the company was converted into a stock corporation and traded under the name Waggonfabrik Aktien-Gesellschaft vorm. P. Herbrand & Cie., Cologne-Ehrenfeld . At that time the company had 480 employees; two years later there were already 700. In 1917 the company was incorporated into Linke-Hofmann-Werke Aktiengesellschaft .

As early as 1887, the Herbrand wagon factory was building battery-powered trams. The Siegburger Kreisblatt reported on April 20, 1887 about the first test drive in Cologne.

Due to the relocation of the neighboring railway line to a dam between 1913 and 1923, the direct rail connection was omitted. In 1928 the production facilities were shut down.
