history
Foundation and expansion
The company was founded in 1838 by Johann Hugo Jacob Talbot (* December 4, 1794 - † February 11, 1850) and the Brussels coach manufacturer Pierre Pauwels to carry out a major order for 200 passenger and freight cars . Later cars were produced for the railways in Germany and the Benelux countries. In 1844 a branch was opened in Heidelberg north of the main train station, which was closed again in 1849. In 1845 production was relocated near the North Station. After the death of Johann Hugo Jacob Talbot, the factory was initially shut down, but five years later, in 1855, by his sons Carl Gustav (1829–1899), Julius Josef (1818–1896) and Eduard Talbot (1817–1896) together the railway engineer Peter Herbrand re-founded as G. Talbot and Herbrand . After Herbrand left, who founded the P. Herbrand & Cie wagon factory in Cologne-Ehrenfeld in 1866 , the company was finally given the name Waggonfabrik Talbot , which was valid until 1995 . In 1860, the company moved into the site on Jülicher Strasse in the Aachen-Nord industrial area , where production was located until 2013. The Talbot self-unloader , which was developed by Georg Talbot , son of Carl Gustav Talbot and company manager in the third generation, has been in production since 1894 . By 1900 Talbot had around 400 employees.
In 1913 Talbot bought the competing wagon factory JP Goossens in the Aue district of Eschweiler , which until 1908 belonged to Phoenix AG for mining and smelting operations . This meant, in particular through the doubling of the association quota in the state railway business, an extraordinary increase and brought considerable advantages with regard to a more efficient production. In the course of further rationalization , this branch was shut down in 1923 and its production was relocated to the correspondingly enlarged Aachen plant, where 1700 people were employed in 1929. Since 1934, were in response to the economic crisis diesel - railcar manufactured. Also tram vehicles belonged to the range of products, but whose production went to the construction of the last of the streetcar Aachen railcars produced the series 1001-1011 ASEAG to the subsidiary DUEWAG over. Georg Talbot managed the company until his death in 1948. Subsequently, his son Richard Talbot took over the management and in 1975 passed it on to his nephew Kurt Capellmann .
For a longer period of time Talbot also owned shares in the Düsseldorf - Krefeld wagon manufacturer DUEWAG AG . This stake was sold to Siemens AG in 1989 .
Takeover by Bombardier Transportation
The Canadian conglomerate Bombardier bought Talbot in 1995. At that time the plant had 1250 employees. Among the former products of 1994 included developing talent ( Ta LBOT le ichter N ahverkehrs t rubbed venture) and the final assembly of the LRVs Flexity Swift .
Since the closure of the Dutch manufacturer Werkspoor in 1968, the Dutch market has been a major customer. Talbot delivered the last series of Plan V, the SGM Sprinter, the ICM Koploper , the DDM double-decker cars, the SM90 Railhopper, DM90 Buffel and the DD-IRM and VIRM double-decker multiple units . After the takeover by Bombardier, however, many vehicles were produced in the group, from 2001 onwards the focus was on final assembly, the shell structures for railcars were supplied from Görlitz. So the first of 51 was in July 2008, features the model VIRM-4 to the Nederlandse Spoorwegen passed. The VIRM-4 is a vehicle with a relatively large proportion of wood in the interior and is considered the successor to the VIRM-3, VIRM-2, VIRM and IRM models.
Separation from Bombardier and foundation of Talbot Services
In October 2012, Bombardier announced the closure of the plant for June 2013. Around 600 employees were affected. The employees who resisted the closure chose the legendary Aachen figure, the well- fortified blacksmith , to identify with them.
The new Talbot Services GmbH has taken over the location and made it possible for around 240 employees to continue to work. At times, the company manufactured the electric vehicle Work for StreetScooter GmbH in addition to rail vehicles.
