The media house Aachen GmbH , 2019 newspaper publisher Aachen GmbH , is a regional media company in the area Aachen - Düren - Heinsberg . The publishing house's core journalistic products are the two daily newspapers, Aachener Zeitung and Aachener Nachrichten .

history

Aachen news

During the last months of the war and after the Allied troops marched into Aachen, the first newspaper no longer controlled by the National Socialists appeared under the name Aachener Nachrichten . With the first issue of January 24, 1945, the military government linked the hope that “the Aachener Nachrichten will mark the beginning of the reconstruction of a free German press”. Initially, American press officers checked the contents of the paper, which passed into German hands on June 27, 1945 with License No. 1. The aim was to build on the tradition of the Aachener Anzeiger, founded in 1872, and the Politisches Tagesblatt, founded in 1878 and published until September 1944. Both were shaped by the work of the La Ruelle and Cerfontaine publishing families. In 1996, the Rheinische Post media group joined the publishing company of Aachener Nachrichten and replaced the descendants of the founding generation of the Cerfontaine family.

Aachen newspaper

The next issue of the Aachener Volkszeitung appeared on March 6, 1946 , initially twice a week with four pages and a circulation of 53,000 copies. The British military government granted the founders Johannes Ernst, Jakob Schmitz, Albert Maas and Josef Hofmann license no. 8 after the Second World War for the publication of a Christian-Democratic daily newspaper. Despite the difficult material situation, seven local editions were made in the Aachen administrative district . From 1948 the people's newspaper was printed on its own rotary press, and from 1950 it appeared six days a week. With the inauguration of the publishing house on Theaterstrasse in March 1951, the construction phase was completed. On the 50th anniversary of the license being granted on March 6, 1996, the Aachener Volkszeitung was renamed the Aachener Zeitung .

In January 1975 the editors of the Aachener Zeitung and the Aachener Nachrichten decided to merge the two daily newspapers. The concept envisaged a merger of the advertising business and administration as well as the joint use of technical systems and sales organizations. The editorial offices of both daily newspapers remained independent and in competition with one another. Zeitungsverlag Aachen GmbH was founded in May 1975 , in which currently (2020) the Aachener Verlagsgesellschaft 70 percent and the Aachener Nachrichten Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co.KG , which in turn is a 100% subsidiary of the Rheinisch-Bergische Verlagsgesellschaft mbH , the holding company of the Rheinische Post media group , is, holds 30% of the shares. The Aachener Verlagsgesellschaft itself is wholly owned by the founding families Ernst, Hofmann and Maas from the Aachener Zeitung . In 2003, the economic development of the daily newspapers in Germany made it necessary to cut the structures of the Aachen newspapers in order to secure the existence of the two titles. A partial amalgamation of the jacket and individual local sections of both daily newspapers was implemented.
