The Rheinische Post Mediengruppe is a media company based in Düsseldorf. Rheinisch-Bergische Verlagsgesellschaft mbH, founded in 1995, acts as the holding company. The media group is one of the five newspaper publishers with the highest circulation in Germany.

history

In 1946,  the Rheinische Post was one of the first newspapers in the British zone to receive  its license after the Second World War. The founders of the new, Christian-oriented newspaper were the journalist and newspaper publisher  Anton Betz , the former mayor of Düsseldorf and later Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia,  Karl Arnold,  and the lawyer  Erich Wenderoth . In the meeting room of the Düsseldorf city council, Anton Betz received the license for the newspaper, which initially could only appear twice a week. The newspaper had a circulation of 235,000 copies, one copy cost 20  pfennigs . The headlines read: "Extreme efforts to supply Germany" and "Reduction of food rations".

In 1971, the media group established the  Anton Betz Foundation of the Rheinische Post eV  to promote science and research. The foundation, which  bears the name of the founding publisher  Anton Betz , helped in particular with the establishment and expansion of the  University of Düsseldorf . In the following years the media group expanded its activities on a national level. In 1994 she also oriented herself abroad and took over the Mafra publishing group in the Czech Republic. In 1999 the group acquired shares in the Polish newspaper Express Bydgoski , and a year later in the Polish newspaper Nowosci Toruń . Further foreign investments followed in 2005 with the acquisition of shares in the Dutch advertising newspaper publisher Nederlandse Weekbladen Groep (NWG) and in 2009 with the participation in the Slovakian publishing house Petit Press ( SME ). In 2013 the media group sold its activities in the Czech Republic to the Agrofert holding company owned by Andrej Babiš , and in 2014 the remaining foreign activities in the Netherlands, Poland and Slovakia were sold.
