The Streetscooter Work as a delivery van from DHL (2017)

The Street Scooter GmbH (proper spelling StreetScooter ), headquartered in Aachen is a German manufacturer of electric vehicles . The company is a subsidiary of Deutsche Post . In Aachen and Düren, in addition to fully electric vans, it also produces electric cargo bikes for predominantly inner-city use. After the Post had not found a partner for the company as previously announced, the production of the street scooter is to be discontinued in the course of 2020; In the future, the company will only operate the Group's existing fleet.

history

founding

The prototype of the C16 from 2014

In June 2010, Achim Kampker and Günther Schuh founded Street Scooter GmbH (renamed StreetScooter GmbH in August 2014), a privately organized research initiative at RWTH Aachen University , which, together with 80 medium-sized companies and numerous research institutions, such as the WZL machine tool laboratory at RWTH Aachen University , developed an inexpensive electric vehicle specifically for short-haul travel. The electric car should be offered for a price of 5,000 euros (plus battery rental). The research initiative has subsequently developed into an independent company. The Zeitgeist concept was shown to the public for the first time in May 2011 , and the first prototype of the Streetscooter Compact followed in autumn at the IAA in Frankfurt. It was followed by the commercial vehicle version Work . In 2012, Kampker founded the non-profit network for affordable and sustainable electric mobility and became its first chairman.

At RWTH Aachen University, a fully functional electric car prototype, the Streetscooter C16, which was presented to the public on October 25, 2014 at EuroMold , was built with a multi-material 3D printer from Stratasys in twelve months .

In 2014, around 40 employees produced 200 of the Work commercial vehicle version on the grounds of the Talbot wagon factory on Jülicher Strasse in the Aachen-Nord industrial area , 70 of which are used as delivery vehicles at Deutsche Post . The declared goal was to offer the Streetscooter Work from 2015 for 20,000 euros. In May 2014 it became known that the city of Aachen, the city region of Aachen and the Sparkasse Aachen had ordered electric vehicles from the company. In 2014, the company built a test track for its delivery vehicles in the German-Dutch business park Avantis .

Takeover by Deutsche Post

In December 2014, Deutsche Post bought the company, making it a wholly-owned subsidiary. Previously, attempts by Deutsche Post to have a car manufacturer develop an electric vehicle for delivery operations had failed, whereupon it decided to develop a vehicle itself.

Series production of the Streetscooter Work began in April 2016 ; the first 2,000 vehicles should be produced by the end of the year. In fact, it was possible to produce a total of 1,906 vehicles by the end of 2016. Post board member Jürgen Gerdes said in 2016 that in the long term the entire Post fleet of around 70,000 vehicles should be replaced by electric cars. Starting in 2017, around 10,000 vehicles should originally be produced annually. By September 2017, the production capacity had already increased to 15,000 vehicles per year. At the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2016, Streetscooter presented the larger Streetscooter Work L model .

In April 2017, the Post announced that it would open a second production facility in North Rhine-Westphalia that same year. In September the media reported that this location would be in Düren . The annual production should be evenly distributed between the Work and Work L models . In addition, the streetscooter is now also available for external customers such as local authorities. In the same month the fish wholesaler Deutsche See announced that it would buy 80 street scooters. The vehicles are equipped with refrigerated cases for up to 680 kilograms of fish and are to be used in major German cities. The price for the Streetscooter Work starts from 40,400 euros.

Swiss Post also announced that it would be producing the Work XL (20 cubic meters ) in cooperation with Ford from July 2017 . By the end of 2018 she wanted to use at least 2500 vehicles of the type in inner-city delivery traffic. The Work XL will initially only be produced for Deutsche Post's own use ; The 2500 Streetscooter XL ordered had been assembled by the end of 2019. Since then (as of January 2020) its production at Ford has been suspended.

In October 2017, the GLS Bank , the financial service provider Comco Leasing and the Deutsche Post DHL Group presented a project that provides for the financing and sale of 500 electrically powered commercial vehicles from Streetscooter. In 2018, Swiss Post concluded an agreement with the BMW subsidiary Alphabet Fuhrparkmanagement GmbH, which specializes in leasing , to sell street scooter vehicles. From April 2018, the company worked with selected Ford dealers.

Vehicles have also been produced at the second location in Düren since May 30, 2018. This increases the production capacity to 20,000 vehicles annually. For the time being, production should be run in a single shift. Thus 46 vehicles were produced in Düren per day.

Losses and cessation of production

According to media reports, the street scooter division of Deutsche Post made a loss of 70 million euros in 2018; With the StreetScooter, however, Swiss Post would like to save 60–80% of the costs for maintenance and wear and tear and 60–70% of the costs for fuel, while also reducing CO 2 emissions. Electric vehicles are also exempt from vehicle tax for ten years.

Deutsche Post intended to sell the Streetscooter company since 2019. In a joint venture with the Chinese company Chery , production capacities of 100,000 street scooters should be built in China by 2021 with an investment volume of 500 million euros.

After no partner could be found for the company and the losses in 2019 amounted to up to 100 million euros, the Post announced in February 2020 that it would cease production of the street scooters in the course of 2020. The group subsidiary will now be a pure operator of the existing fleet. The decision resulted in one-off expenses and depreciation of up to EUR 400 million at Post.

The vehicle is for the Zustellbetrieb the parcel service DHL and the joint delivery designed. It is driven by a permanent magnet synchronous motor, has front-wheel drive and electro-hydraulic power steering . The service brake works with disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear, which are hydraulically operated. There is also a vacuum servo with an electrically operated suction pump. The front wheels are individually suspended on MacPherson struts and wishbones , the rear wheels on parallel swing arms with torsion bar springs .

The frame is made of steel, predominantly (57%) of higher-strength qualities and hollow profiles. The side members are made of dual-phase steel . The lithium-ion battery is protected from impact in the double floor under the driver's cab. Another 12 V battery is located behind the driver's cab on the left under the loading area. The loading area is arranged so high that the parcels can be unloaded without bending down and the wheel arches do not protrude into the loading area. The box body is accessible on both sides and from the rear. Seven letter boxes can be stowed on the right-hand side next to the driver's seat. The box body and the bodywork panels such as the roof, door skins and front hood are made of plastic.

developments

At the end of 2017, five vehicles were equipped with a fine dust particle filter from Mann + Hummel in order to absorb the resulting tire, brake and road wear.

Problems encountered

Batteries

460 Work L vehicles were temporarily withdrawn from service in 2018 after two vehicle fires during ongoing operations (in 2017 a fire occurred due to a technical defect in the parked vehicle). The Post named the upstream supplier, whose name it did not provide for contractual reasons, as the cause of incorrect connection welds in the traction batteries. The expansion of the battery during charging and discharging (battery cell breathing) causes mechanical forces to act on the battery system; Problems with welds can lead to the opening of a cell, which can thermally runaway , according to one expert. According to another expert, the start-up does not have the same experience in the area of quality assurance as an established automotive company.

Winter operation

In December 2017, there was criticism from deliverers and works councils, according to which the vehicles previously delivered in everyday operation in the winter months would not fully meet the practical requirements of DHL. In particular, the electric heating shortens the range specified with 100 km to 70 km, so that operational processes would be impaired. This impairment is denied by Deutsche Post or DHL.

Hydrogen propulsion

The streetscooter H2 Panel Van with hydrogen drive has been announced for 2020 . The range will be up to 500 km with a 6 kg tank (at a maximum of 120 km / h and 800 kg load with a standard refueling of 700 bar). DHL has already ordered 100 vehicles.

By the beginning of 2019, around 10,000 street scooters were registered in Germany, 9,000 of them from Deutsche Post. In the whole of 2018, the market share of registered trucks of the Streetscooter company was 1.3%.

Austria

In 2017, the first 10 ten street scooters were registered in Austria, and no new ones were added by the end of 2019.
