The Umschau is a magazine of the MDR television , which deals in particular with topics from the areas of economy, consumer and social issues - especially in the broadcasting area ( Saxony-Anhalt , Thuringia and Saxony ). The Umschau is a weekly live broadcast (bi-weekly until March 2011) with four to five magazine articles, which is broadcast on Tuesdays at 8:15 p.m. on MDR. It is the oldest regularly broadcast magazine on German television.

The start of broadcasting for the science magazine (Umschau - Neues aus Wissenschaft und Technik) on GDR television DFF was May 18, 1961. After the turnaround and with the founding of the MDR, Umschau was initially a business magazine, and later a counseling and consumer program.

Today the program sees itself as a socially critical magazine with a focus on social and demographic changes as well as the realities of life in the East and West. Because of its investigative and exclusive research, Umschau is one of the MDR productions most frequently cited in news agencies and newspapers.

One of the actions that was most perceived by the public was the “Rentenbescheide” test at the turn of 2004/2005. In this spectator campaign, which is unique on German television, over 1000 official notices from East pension recipients were checked for correctness. Umschau has published a number of guidebooks (rent, pension and old-age provision as well as tax advice).
