history

Adolf Mann and Erich Hummel, managing directors of the Stuttgart clothing manufacturer Bleyle , acquired the filter systems division of the automotive supplier Mahle after the war-related cessation of Bleyle knitwear production and in 1941 took over the production of textile and felt air filters as Filterwerk Mann + Hummel GmbH with previous Bleyle employees the automotive industry. Among other things, air filters were made for the Maybach HL 230 engines , which were installed in the German Panther and Tiger armored vehicles . After the end of the war, production was gradually expanded. In 1954, a second plant was set up in Ludwigsburg and the branch locations in Bösperde (1946) and Marklkofen (1962). In addition to air filters, oil filters have also been manufactured since 1958 , which are also mainly supplied to the automotive industry. The name “Filterwerk” was dropped in the company name in 2003 when the company was renamed Mann + Hummel GmbH .

From the late 1940s onwards, Mann + Hummel was also active in the textile industry under the name Mann Pamina Moden , before this line of business was sold to Schiesser in 1974 . Further diversification beyond the filter production exists u. a. since 1948 through the equipment manufacturing division, particularly for the plastics industry. Adolf Mann died in 1971, Erich Hummel in 1984. Kurk Wilks has been the company's head since January 2020.

Environmental protection and sustainability

Since the beginning of 2006, the entire group has had a uniform environmental protection standard. In 1998, Sonneberg was the first location to introduce an environmental management system. 25 plants worldwide are currently certified according to the ISO 14001 environmental protection standard.

In addition to environmentally friendly production, the focus is increasingly on the environmental compatibility of the products themselves. Plastic materials from recycling - so-called "Recompounded Plastic Materials" - can significantly reduce the environmental impact. Mann + Hummel, for example, developed a cylinder head cover made of such a recompounded plastic material and introduced it into series production. The material consists of polyamide fibers, which arise as rejects and overproduction in carpet manufacture.

In addition to weight advantages, plastic also offers new possibilities for component design and thus a higher degree of functional integration. This usually reduces material consumption. One example of this is the prototype of a plastic oil pan presented at the IAA 2007.

Research and Development

Mann + Hummel employs around 1,200 people in research and development and holds over 3,000 patents, patent applications and utility models.

Research areas are filter materials and components for biofuels , air-cooled batteries and systems that regulate the pressure and humidity inside the lithium-ion battery and protect the batteries. The company also develops solutions in the field of water filtration and outdoor air quality. Since 2017, the company has been testing solutions to reduce fine dust pollution in various pilot projects.
