The Maybach HL 230 was a liquid-cooled, twelve-cylinder - V engine from the time of World War II . The by Maybach engine in Friedrichshafen developed gasoline engine with about 23 liters capacity was in heavy German tanks used, including Panther , Jagdpanther , Tiger II , Jagdtiger and later versions of the Tiger I and Sturmtiger .

The bench angle is 60 degrees , the bore 130 mm and the stroke 145 mm. The crankcase and cylinder heads were made of gray cast iron . The cylinder liners from centrifugal casting (also gray cast iron) were interchangeable. The piston were made from a aluminum alloy ge forges . The engine lubrication was designed as a position-independent dry sump lubrication ( oil quantity 28 liters). The two overhead camshafts (one per cylinder bank) were driven by spur gears . Four DVG / Pierburg - twin carburettor of the type Solex 52 JFF II D, as carburetor working, provided the mixture formation . Two magneto ignition units (one per cylinder bank) fed the twelve spark plugs via two ignition distributors . The electric starter was used to start when the engine is warm or at higher temperatures; alternatively, the engine could be started manually using the flywheel starter or with an external motor. The nominal output was given as 600 HP (441 kW) at 2500 min −1 , the short-term maximum output was up to 700 HP (515 kW) at 3000 min −1 . The engine had at 2100 min -1 its maximum torque of 184.6 kg · m (1.8 kN · m).

Because of the great demand, the HL 230 u. a. from winter 1943/44 also manufactured under license by Auto Union AG in the Siegmar plant (formerly Wanderer ). Production ended with the occupation of the plants and the German surrender .
