The Siegmar district, incorporated in 1950, is located in the west of Chemnitz . The districts of Reichenbrand , Rabenstein , Rottluff , Schönau and Stelzendorf and the community of Neukirchen / Erzgeb border it .

history

The place, which was probably founded in the first half of the 12th century, is first mentioned in a document in 1375. A certain "Henricus de Sygemar", probably a lackey of Rudolf von Brandt, can be seen as the founder of the village. At this time, the place, like other surrounding villages of the Rabenstein rule, became the property of the Chemnitz Benedictine monastery . In 1548 it was spelled “Sigkmar” (place of a Sigemar) . With the dissolution of the monastery, Siegmar, which was only slightly developed due to the ban mile of 1331, came to the Chemnitz office .

The smallest village on the upper reaches of the Kappelbach, an independent municipality since 1838 , developed into an important industrial municipality in the 19th and 20th centuries. The favorable location to the Chemnitz – Zwickau railway line , which was opened in 1858, played a key role in this, as a rural community with a cotton mill and a stocking factory developed into an industrial location for glove production, the textile industry and mechanical engineering.

Stelzendorf has been incorporated into Siegmar since January 1, 1920 and Reichenbrand since April 1, 1922 . By thus rose to more than 10,000 inhabitants Siegmar received in 1927 on May 17, municipal law . During the Nazi era , the Saxon Gauleiter Martin Mutschmann arranged for the town of Siegmar to merge with the community of Schönau-Neustadt, and on October 1, 1935, both places were united to form the town of Siegmar-Schönau .

In the course of the air raids on Chemnitz on September 11, 1944, the USAAF carried out a targeted attack on the Auto Union plant in Siegmar (formerly Wanderer ) , which built half of all engines for the " Tiger " and " Panther " tanks . 74 B-17 bombers, accompanied by 20  Mustang fighters, dropped 450 high-explosive and many incendiary bombs on industrial plants and residential buildings. 85 people, including 41 foreign workers, were killed in the Auto Union plant. 21 people died in the residential area of Siegmar.

On July 1, 1950, the city lost its independence as a result of the incorporation into Chemnitz.

In 1906/07, the park was laid out on the meadows of the Kappelbachaue opposite the Siegmar Town Hall, which was built in 1904, and expanded to the east from 1936–1938 - the center of the park pond is the center.
