The Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn (MRB) is a brand of the railway companies Transdev Regio Ost (TDRO) and Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB), both of which belong to the French Transdev Group . As of October 2019, ten lines are being operated in Saxony on behalf of the responsible transport authorities . The regional express connections between Dresden and Hof as well as Leipzig and Chemnitz are of supraregional importance and substitute for long-distance transport that is not offered on these routes.

history

In the course of the new tender for the regional transport network in the Leipzig area, the former Veolia Verkehr was awarded the contract for a number of local transport routes that were previously operated by DB Regio Südost . Initially, when the timetable changed in December 2008, the route from Halle (Saale) to Eilenburg went to Veolia Verkehr, followed by six more routes in December 2009. The order for the routes was awarded for two years. With the opening of the City Tunnel in Leipzig, another tender was issued. In contrast to Deutsche Bahn, Veolia Verkehr guaranteed that a customer service representative would be available on every train.

With the takeover of operations on the Halle – Eilenburg line, the then transport group Veolia Verkehr rearranged its brands in local rail transport in the east. The Leipzig – Geithain line, which was previously operated under the HarzElbeExpress (HEX) brand, was integrated into the newly founded Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn . The Connex Sachsen GmbH , then called Veolia Transport Regio Ost GmbH . Since March 16, 2015, the company has been trading as Transdev Regio Ost.

Following a joint tender by the Verkehrsverbund Mittelachsen (VMS) and the Zweckverband für die Nahverkehrsraum Leipzig (ZVNL), the Transdev Regio Ost has also been operating the regional express line between Leipzig and Chemnitz since December 2015. With the use of long-distance vehicles, a higher level of comfort for the passengers was sought - than is otherwise usual in local transport. The contract runs until December 2023, with the possibility of an extension until 2025. On June 12, 2016, Transdev Regio Ost also took over the operation of the RB 110 Leipzig - Döbeln line.

On June 8, 2015, Bayerische Oberlandbahn GmbH (BOB) was awarded the contract for the management of the so-called E network in Central Saxony. The contract with the Central Saxony transport association runs from June 2016 to December 2030. The service is also carried under the Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn brand.

In July 2018, the Central Saxony Transport Association announced that from 2019 up to three pairs of trains on the RB45 line from Elsterwerda to Berlin should be extended. This connection-free train connection from Chemnitz to the capital should run as a regional express from Elsterwerda. With a journey time of around three hours, it would have been just as fast as the transfer connections via Leipzig Hbf. There was no implementation by 2020, concrete plans for the future are not known from the Central Saxony Transport Association.

On October 1, 2019, Transdev Regio Ost took over the lines of the so-called VVO diesel network as part of an emergency award, after the previous operator of the Städtebahn Sachsen had to cease operations due to insolvency.

Line networks

Diesel network north-west Saxony

The North West Saxony diesel network is operated by Transdev Regio Ost on behalf of the Leipzig Local Transport Authority (ZVNL) and the Central Saxony Transport Association (VMS).

RB 110 Leipzig Hbf - Grimma - Döbeln Hbf Jun. 2016 - Dec. 2025 -

On the RE 6 line, Transdev Regio Ost GmbH uses block-braked UIC-Z compartment cars and, as control cars, Halberstadt center-entry cars of the former Deutsche Reichsbahn , which are hauled by Siemens ER20 locomotives. Diesel railcars of the types Bombardier Talent , Regio-Shuttle RS1 and LINT 41 operate on the RB 110 line . Depending on requirements, the railcars are also used in double or triple traction.

Since the vehicles in the RE 6 line are subject to constant criticism, they should be replaced from the first quarter of 2019. Each of the future five sets will consist of two used double-decker coaches and two single-decker passenger coaches, and some will have air conditioning and disc brakes. Barrier-free boarding in the double-decker control car will also be possible. In February 2020, however, the old vehicles were still in use.

On the RB 110, the Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn temporarily ran rail replacement services for the amplifier trips between Leipzig and Grimma in 2018 due to a lack of staff.

Electric network central axis

The Central Saxony electrical network is served by the Bavarian Oberlandbahn (BOB) on behalf of the transport authority Verkehrsverbund Mittelachsen (VMS), Verkehrsverbund Vogtland (VVV), Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (VVO) and Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB).

In the Central Saxony electrical network, only Alstom Coradia Continental electric multiple units are used, which were procured by the Central Saxony Transport Association and made available for the transports ordered.

In December 2016, defects were found on the running surfaces of the wheels and on the doors of the new ALSTOM trains. To remedy the deficiencies, the affected trains were withdrawn from service. The passengers sometimes had to accept train delays, train cancellations and replacement trains.

VVO diesel network

The VVO diesel network is operated by Transdev Regio Ost on behalf of the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (VVO). After the Sachsen Städtebahn went bankrupt , the company received the contract as part of an emergency award.

Criticism of the predecessor company of Transdev Regio Ost GmbH was caused by the fact that no electric vehicles were used in S-Bahn plans until 2013, although the route network used around Leipzig has been almost completely electrified for decades. The responsible customer ( ZVNL ) did not consider this to be relevant to the tender. Until December 2013, Desiro railcars and Regio-Shuttle RS1 were used on the routes Leipzig – Wurzen, Leipzig – Borna, Halle – Eilenburg and Leipzig – Geithain .

The Guten-Tag-Ticket offers a price advantage of up to 5 € compared to the Saxony-Ticket . In total, more children can be taken along free of charge than with the Sachsen-Ticket. Double deal

The Bayerische Oberlandbahn GmbH and the Transdev Regio Ost GmbH offer their own tariff for frequent travelers and commuters in the incoming and outgoing traffic of the Verkehrsverbund Mittelachsen and the Verkehrsverbund Vogtland . The "double deal" is a time card. As a (subscription) monthly or weekly ticket (also for schoolchildren) for exactly the same price as with Deutsche Bahn. The advantage here is a VMS tariff zone at no extra charge, as buses and trams in the respective VMS zone can be used free of charge for the period. Unlike the DB tariff of the same price, however, no free BahnCard 25 is issued. In the following some examples should serve as an explanation:

  • Dresden – Chemnitz: VMS zone 13 (for Chemnitz) is included free of charge, the city of Chemnitz can be used free of charge by buses and trams. The free use of the rest of the local rail transport (e.g. B. between Chemnitz Hbf and Chemnitz-Siegmar or between Chemnitz Hbf and Chemnitz Kinderwaldstätte) is excluded.
  • Chemnitz – Leipzig and Chemnitz – Riesa: here too, the use of buses and trams in VMS zone 13 is already included in the price (see above for local passenger transport restrictions).
  • Zwickau – Reichenbach / Vogtl. whether Bf: There is the VMS zone 16 (Zwickau) and the VVV zone Reichenbach free of charge. With a weekly ticket for this route, the entire Zwickau urban area, the journey between Zwickau and Reichenbach, as well as the adjacent Reichenbach network zone can be used.
  • The double deal does not apply to cross-tariff zone journeys for the Central Saxony transport association. To do this, a ticket at the transport association price must be purchased.

The double deal will also be used in the parallel transport of DB Regio and Vogtlandbahn , e.g. B. in the Dresden S-Bahn line S3 Dresden – Tharandt – Freiberg and in the RB2 Zwickau – Hof, as well as in the lines S2, S3, S5 and S5X of the S-Bahn Central Germany (each south of Leipzig Hbf) and in the network of Erzgebirgsbahn recognized.
