The Geithain station is an operating point of the Neukieritzsch – Chemnitz railway and the Leipzig – Geithain railway that joins here in the municipality of the city of Geithain in Saxony .

Geithain train station is in the northeast of Geithain in the south of the Saxon district of Leipzig .

history

Geithain station was opened on April 8, 1872 as a through station on the Kieritzsch – Chemnitz line. Before the Leipzig – Geithain railway was officially opened on May 2, 1887, the Geithain station was completely rebuilt. In addition, a locomotive station was built. The station was also of greater importance in freight transport, as large quantities of building materials from the nearby brickworks and quarries had been loaded into the station since the end of the 19th century. The station had a goods shed next to the station building, a residential building for railway employees, a signal box and a building for the rural trading cooperative (BHG) . In 1993 the railway maintenance office was dissolved.

The station area received its current appearance from 2002, when parts of the track system were dismantled with the expansion of the Leipzig – Chemnitz line. The passenger transport systems were completely rebuilt and made barrier-free with lifts. The main platform, the tongue platform of the S-Bahn and the central platform have a height of 55 centimeters and a length of at least 170 meters. From standing here electronic interlocking of the manufacturer Thales is since December 2004 the entire railway line Leipzig-Geithain from Mölkau plus the railway lines Neukieritzsch Chemnitz between Frohburg and Wittgensdorf center and also to the regional network Mittelsachsen of DB Netz belonging route Borsdorf-Coswig between Beucha and Leisnig controlled.

The section from Borna to Geithain was electrified in the summer of 2010, so that the MRB 2/70 local transport line, which previously operated from Leipzig via Borna to Geithain , will be included in the network of Central Germany's S-Bahn with the opening of the Leipzig City Tunnel, which can only be driven electrically in December 2013 could.
