The Transdev Regio Ost , or TDRO for short , is a railway company based in Leipzig . It is an indirectly wholly owned subsidiary of Transdev GmbH . Until the change of name in November 2008 it was called Connex Sachsen , then until March 15, 2015 Veolia Verkehr Regio Ost .
Railway operations are carried out under the Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn ( MRB ) brand . This brand is used jointly with Bayerische Oberlandbahn GmbH , a sister company within the Transdev Group .
Transdev GmbH is a member of the tariff association of federal and non-federal railways in Germany (TBNE).
history
Lausitzbahn / Connex Saxony
In 2001, the parent company , which was then still operating under the name Connex , founded the Lausitzbahn subsidiary , which won the tender for subsidized regional transport on the Zittau – Görlitz – Cottbus and part of the Zittau – Görlitz – Dresden – Leipzig line with the start of operations on December 15, 2002. In July 2005 Connex changed the name of the operating company to Connex Sachsen GmbH based in Görlitz.
From December 2004 to December 2008 Connex Sachsen operated the self-employed Lausitz-Express between Leipzig Hbf and Görlitz .
In the renewed award procedure Connex lost both routes to the East German Railway in December 2008 . The Lausitzbahn brand disappeared completely due to the lost tender.
Veolia Verkehr Regio Ost
In the course of the new tender for the regional transport network in the Leipzig area, the former Veolia Verkehr was awarded the contract for a number of local transport routes that were previously operated by DB Regio Südost . Initially, when the timetable changed in December 2008, the route from Halle (Saale) to Eilenburg went to Veolia Verkehr, followed by six more routes in December 2009. The order for the routes was awarded for two years. With the opening of the City Tunnel in Leipzig, another tender was issued. In contrast to Deutsche Bahn, Veolia Verkehr guaranteed that a customer service representative would be available on every train.
With the takeover of operations on the Halle – Eilenburg line, the then transport group Veolia Verkehr rearranged its brands in local rail transport in central Germany. The Leipzig – Geithain line, which was previously operated under the HarzElbeExpress (HEX) brand, was integrated into the newly founded Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn . The Connex Sachsen GmbH , then called Veolia Transport Regio Ost GmbH .
Criticism of Veolia Verkehr Regio Ost was caused by the fact that no electric vehicles were used in S-Bahn plans until 2013, although the route network used around Leipzig has been almost completely electrified for decades. The responsible customer ( ZVNL ) did not consider this to be relevant to the tender. Until December 2013, Desiro railcars and Regio-Shuttle RS1 were used on the routes Leipzig – Wurzen, Leipzig – Borna, Halle – Eilenburg and Leipzig – Geithain .
Transdev Regio East
Since March 16, 2015, the parent company has been called Transdev GmbH .
In 2015, Transdev Regio Ost GmbH was awarded the contract for the line from Chemnitz to Leipzig for eight to a maximum of ten years, as the ZVMS announced together with the ZVNL . Diesel locomotives of the type ER20 with block-braked Halberstadt express train wagons, which were previously on the way on the Nord-Ostsee-Bahn, are used on the route.
On February 1, 2016 it was announced that Transdev Regio Ost had won the tender for the RB 110 Leipzig - Döbeln line, which will be served by three-part diesel railcars of the Bombardier TALENT type.
In July 2018, the Central Saxony transport association announced that up to three pairs of trains on the RB45 line from Elsterwerda to Berlin will be extended from 2019. This connection-free train connection from Chemnitz to the capital is to operate as an express line from Elsterwerda. With a journey time of around three hours, it will be just as fast as connections via Leipzig.
On September 16, 2019, the association assembly of the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe decided that Transdev Regio Ost GmbH had been awarded the contract for the VVO diesel network as part of an emergency award until the end of 2021, after the Saxony urban railway had to cease operations due to bankruptcy . The VVO diesel network includes the lines RB 33, RB 34, RB 71, RB 72 and RE 19. The takeover of the operational railway operations including the rented vehicles and the staff was completed on October 1, 2019. On June 3, 2020, the association assembly of the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe decided that the services of the VVO diesel network should be provided by DB Regio from December 2021.

On the RE 6 line, Transdev Regio Ost GmbH uses block-braked UIC-Z compartment cars and, as control cars, Halberstadt center-entry cars of the former Deutsche Reichsbahn , which are hauled by Siemens ER20 locomotives. Diesel railcars of the types Bombardier Talent , Regio-Shuttle RS1 and LINT 41 operate on the other lines . Depending on requirements, the railcars are also used in double or triple traction.
Since the rolling stock on the RE 6 was subject to constant criticism, it should be replaced from the first quarter of 2019. Each of the future five sets should consist of two used double-decker coaches and two single-decker passenger coaches and some of them have air conditioning and completely quieter disc brakes. Barrier-free boarding was also provided in the double-decker control cars.
