The company is based in Chemnitz. The company employs a total of around 260 people (as of early 2009). The contract to spin off the company from Deutsche Bahn was signed on April 26, 2001. After the Kurhessenbahn it is the second regional network of the DB.

Today around 150 trains run daily on the Erzgebirgsbahn network. Between 2002 and the beginning of 2008, the number of daily passengers increased from around 1200 to around 4600. According to its own information, the company has been leading the customer satisfaction statistics of the Deutsche Bahn railway companies since July 2002 (as of early 2008). In 2017 the number of passengers was 5200 per day, 252 employees worked for the company.

The contract with the Central Saxony transport association for the provision of local rail passenger transport services in the “Erzgebirge Network” was extended on June 24, 2016 at the previous conditions until the timetable change in June 2021.

Railway companies

Line network

DB RegioNetz Verkehrs GmbH, the railway company of the Erzgebirgsbahn, operates local rail passenger transport on the railway lines from Chemnitz main station to Cranzahl and Olbernhau- Gruenthal and from Zwickau main station to Johanngeorgenstadt . It is operated with diesel locomotives of the 642 series on weekdays in the hour and on weekends every two hours. It also operates two connections between Zwickau and Karlsbad on weekends and on certain public holidays . The Erzgebirgsbahn also operated the local rail transport on the route from Chemnitz to Aue until September 14, 2018 , the route has since been closed due to construction and will subsequently be integrated into the Chemnitz model .

From April 21 to June 11, 2011, the Erzgebirgsbahn used special trains every Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning from Zwickau Hauptbahnhof via Chemnitz Hauptbahnhof to Berlin-Lichtenberg and back in the evening.

Since the timetable change on December 15, 2013, the Erzgebirgsbahn has also been serving the Glauchau – Gößnitz connection every two hours. In 2017, the route network was 233 kilometers long, and 2.4 million train kilometers were operated per year.

vehicles

Since 2003, 16 Erzgebirgsbahn has multiple units of the 642 series , a diesel locomotive of the 202 series (currently not operational) and two snow plows construction Meiningen to vacate the tracks in the winter snow.

When it was founded, it still owned nine class 628 multiple units , but these were replaced by newly delivered, more modern multiple units by 2003.

In 2011/12, a series 642 multiple unit of the Westfrankenbahn was equipped with a hybrid drive as a prototype . It has been in use on the Aschaffenburg – Miltenberg railway line in Bavaria since the end of 2012 . Based on the knowledge gained there, the conversion of another vehicle for the Erzgebirgsbahn is planned, this should lead to the pre-series production. It was planned to convert all 16 vehicles of the Erzgebirgsbahn accordingly from 2014 onwards. The “concrete conversion phase” began in mid-2016.

Railway infrastructure company

Route network

DB RegioNetz Infrastruktur GmbH, as the railway infrastructure company (EIU) of the Erzgebirgsbahn, operates a 252-kilometer route network and, for the most part, the associated passenger transport systems. 217 kilometers of the route network are served by ordered local rail transport. These are the following routes :

Zschopautalbahn
Waldkirchen (Erzgeb), Vossloh Citylink stop on the Erzgebirgsbahn to Cranzahl

The 62-kilometer Zschopau Valley Railway branches off the Dresden – Werdau railway line in Flöha towards the south and leads with numerous engineering structures through the narrow Zschopau valley to the Ore Mountains ridge . The route runs through the important train stations Zschopau , Annaberg-Buchholz and Cranzahl to the Czech border near Weipert . In Cranzahl, the Fichtelbergbahn , which belongs to the Saxon steam railway company , branches off to Oberwiesenthal .

Flöhatalbahn
Railcar of the Erzgebirgsbahn in Falkenau (Flöhatalbahn)
Railcar of the Erzgebirgsbahn in Pockau-Lengefeld station (Flöhatalbahn)

Just like the Zschopautalbahn, the 49-kilometer Flöhatalbahn branches off in Flöha from the main Dresden - Zwickau line to the south. It runs in the Flöha valley via Pockau - Lengefeld , Olbernhau -Grünthal to Neuhausen , but traffic on the Olbernhau-Grünthal-Neuhausen section was stopped in 2001. In February 2014, DB RegioNetz put this and two other routes of the Erzgebirgsbahn to tender for other RIUs.

In Pockau-Lengefeld, the 12-kilometer route to Marienberg branches off, which continued via Reitzenhain to Komotau until the Second World War. After the flood damage in 1999 was repaired, this branch line was reopened on August 26, 2006 with a special train. After that, regular passenger traffic took place until December 2013, when travel between Marienberg and Pockau – Lengefeld was discontinued. Since there is only sporadic military traffic on the Marienberg – Pockau-Lengefeld section , DB RegioNetz put it out to tender in February 2014 for delivery to other RIUs.

Zwönitztalbahn
Railcar of the Erzgebirgsbahn in Chemnitz-Reichenhain (2016)

The 51 km long Zwönitztalbahn connects Chemnitz and Aue via Thalheim / Erzgeb. and Zwönitz along the Zwönitz .

Zwickau – Johanngeorgenstadt

The route runs over a distance of 55 kilometers through the valleys of Zwickauer Mulde and Schwarzwasser and connects Zwickau via Aue and Schwarzenberg / Erzgeb. with Johanngeorgenstadt .

Annaberg-Buchholz Süd – Schwarzenberg

Regular passenger traffic on this 24-kilometer route was discontinued before it was taken over by the Erzgebirgsbahn, so that it has only been used by special and freight trains since then . It is best known for the Markersbach Viaduct . Since the route cannot be operated economically due to the lack of ordered local rail transport, DB RegioNetz put the route out to tender at the beginning of 2014 for delivery to another RIU. So far there has not been a levy.

General renovation (2002 to 2007)

By the end of 2007 the 217 kilometer long track network had been comprehensively renovated and opened to traffic in December 2007. Due to the poor condition of the route, 80 percent of the sections were previously closed or could only be driven at low speed. According to the company, the company had the most inefficient rail network infrastructure in Germany before the renovation. The state, the Central Saxony transport association and DB agreed on a renovation in the amount of 181 million euros. In a five-year construction period, 168 kilometers of tracks were renewed, 41 stations were made barrier-free and nine additional stops were built or relocated closer to the center of the town.

Traffic stations

In 2017, 76 of its own stations belong to the Erzgebirgsbahn network. The passenger transport systems in the Cranzahl station and in the Chemnitz Süd station (platform 3/4) are not operated by DB RegioNetz Infrastruktur (Erzgebirgsbahn) , although the associated routes are leased to the Erzgebirgsbahn. This is still the responsibility of DB Station & Service AG .
