The Flöha (Czech: Flájský potok ) is a right tributary of the Zschopau . At the confluence, it is slightly larger than the Zschopau, and thus hydrologically the main source of the Mulde river system.
Surname
The linguist Ernst Eichler and the onomologist Hans Walther see the origin of the name in the Germanic word flouwan, flewan , which was Middle High German vlöuwen and in Old Sorbian plav (iti) and meant to flood, rinse, float . The Flöha river should be understood as the one on which rafts or washes were made , Old Sorbian Plava , Old or Middle High German Flawa .
course
The river has its source in the Eastern Ore Mountains in the Czech Republic, northwest of the village of Nové Město ( New Town ) and initially runs in a westerly direction. The source is only about one kilometer away from the source of the Wilden Weißeritz and the Freiberger Mulde .
In the Czech Republic, the Flöha is dammed in the Fleyh dam (Údolní nádrž Fláje). At Georgendorf ( Český Jiřetín ) it flows into Saxon territory , immediately behind the border the Flöha is dammed again in the Rauschenbach dam. In Hirschberg the Grenzflüsschen opens Schweinitz and the Floeha forms to Saigerhütte Griinthal the border with the Czech Republic.
In its further course to the northwest, the Flöha flows through Olbernhau and Pockau , where its largest tributary, the Schwarze Pockau with its famous gorge valley, joins. After a total of 67 km, the river flows into the Zschopau in the town of Flöha . Here it has a water flow of around 11 m³ / s compared to a good 10 m³ / s in Zschopau.
Others
The Flöhatal forms the border between the landscapes of the Eastern and Western Ore Mountains and between the natural areas of the Eastern Ore Mountains and the Central Ore Mountains .
During the flood of the century in 2002 , the Flöha rose sharply over its banks and caused considerable damage.
Since 2011, large parts of their valley have been designated as the "Flöhatal" area of community importance , meaning they are protected as a natura 2000 or FFH area . The protected area extends to around 1800 hectares between Deutschkatharinenberg, Rauschenbach or Cämmerswalde in the upper reaches and the city of Flöha. The older nature reserves “Rauenstein” and “Alte Leite” are located in it and have been identified as otters, great mouse ears , brook lampreys , bullheads and the dragonfly species, the green damsel . Since 2007, parts of it have been designated as the European bird sanctuary "Flöhatal" , which, with its size of more than 1850 hectares, also includes areas of the valleys from Schwarzer Pockau and Roter Pockau to their confluence and in particular the populations of the species known there of the kingfisher , black and white Gray woodpecker , red-backed killer , pygmy owl , black stork and eagle owl should receive.

- ↑ The Zschopau is also larger at its mouth than the Freiberg Mulde (23.8 m³ / s compared to 10.3 m³ / s), into which it flows according to its name. The Freiberger Mulde in turn is the larger headwaters of the United Mulde (35.3 m³ / s compared to 26.4 m³ / s).

- ↑ The runoff data are determined from the values of the Borstendorf der Flöha and Hopfgarten and Lichtenwalde an der Zschopau gauges. For the intermediate catchment area, the area runoff was determined from the level data and multiplied by the catchment area areas below the Borstendorf and Hopfgarten gauges.
