Map of the natural areas in the Ore Mountains

The Westerzgebirge than westlichster part of the Erzgebirge a natural space in Saxony and part of the superunit Saxon mountains and highlands . It extends east to the valley of the Schwarzwassers (still counted) or, after its confluence, that of the Zwickauer Mulde and includes the western parts of the former main units Lower (423) and Upper Western Ore Mountains and the southern roofing of the Ore Mountains (420) together.

Compared to earlier natural spatial subdivisions, today's Western Ore Mountains only represent the west of what was previously called the mountain part, while the eastern part is now referred to as the Middle Ore Mountains .

The upper part of the Western Ore Mountains belongs to the Ore Mountains / Vogtland Nature Park .

geography

The Western Ore Mountains flow towards the (south) west into the historical Vogtland and also include some of its localities, while the border to the natural Vogtland (which does not allow any overlap) is largely the watershed between the “Erzgebirge” rivers Zwickauer Mulde and, in the extreme south , Zwota to the "Vogtland" White Elster follows, whereby in the middle and southern course this border is slightly shifted to the west, i. H. the headwaters of the eastern Elster tributaries are still attributed to the Ore Mountains.

To the north, the flat undulating Erzgebirge basin joins the city of Zwickau , while the mountains continue to the south beyond the border with the Czech Republic . The state border largely follows the ridge of the mountains, which merges to the southwest on both sides of the border in the Elster Mountains into the natural Vogtland . The 805 m high Hohe Brand , which is commonly assigned to the Elster Mountains because it is located southwest of the Zwota, still belongs to the Western Ore Mountains.

In the south there is the highest point on Saxon soil with the Auersberg (1019 m above sea level) northwest of Johanngeorgenstadt , which is towered southeast of this city and beyond the state border by the 1043 m high Blatenský vrch (Plattenberg).
