history

Until the 15th century

The settlement of the town and castle Schöneck as a medieval manor presumably began between 1180 and 1200. Albertus de Schoenegge was mentioned in writing in 1225 as the first owner of the castle (castrum Schoennecke) and town of Schöneck . In the 14th century the castle and town of Schöneck were owned by the bailiffs of Plauen . In 1327 Vogt Heinrich the Elder von Plauen gave his rule to King John of Bohemia as a fief . Along with other localities, Schöneck also became part of the crown of Bohemia . In 1370, Emperor Charles IV raised Schöneck to the rank of town and gave it the same rights as the town of Elbogen in Bohemia. Evidence that the Schönecker Thosse ruled the castle dates from the same year . This noble family emerged from the gentlemen von Schöneck. In the following period, the castle and town of Schöneck came to Count Günter von Schwarzburg in 1397 and to the Wettins in 1422 when King Sigismund pledged it . As a result, the castle rule of Schöneck changed from Bohemian to Saxon rule, whereby the freedoms and rights of Schöneck were not affected and were confirmed again and again in the future. As early as 1430, Elector Friedrich of Saxony and Duke Sigismund of Saxony pledged the castle, office and the bailiwick of Schöneck and Schönbach to the von Wolffersdorff brothers . In 1437, the first bourgeois Chancellor of the Holy Roman Empire, Kaspar Schlick , Burgrave of Eger and Elbogen (today Loket), received the Schöneck Castle with all its accessories by pledging from the Wettins. Later he was given the rule of the castle as a legal heir and fief. In 1466, his successors were granted Schöneck Castle and its accessories as an overall fief by the Saxon electors. The descendant Wenzel (Wenzlaw) Schlick , mentioned again in 1487, sold the Schöneck Palace "with all its affiliations" in 1499 to Hans von Scheuben from Eger. There are purchase disputes because Schlick has sold the castle to two interested parties. In 1534, the guardians of Adams von Scheuben sold the Schöneck estate, consisting of the castle, estate and town, to the Ernestine Elector Johann Friedrich for their ward . After 1542 it was integrated into the Voigtsberg office.

16th to 19th century

During the Schmalkaldic War in 1546, the town and castle of Schöneck were captured and devastated by imperial troops. Three years later, the Bohemian King Ferdinand sold his chancellor Heinrich von Plauen in gratitude for the services rendered in the Schmalkaldic War and the like. a. Castle and town of Schöneck. Since then Schöneck has belonged to the Plauen office . Due to the defeat of the Ernestines in the Schmalkaldic War , the three Vogtland offices of Pausa , Plauen and Voigtsberg came into possession of the Bohemian crown in 1547 . In 1548 the lords of Plauen bought the offices back as a Bohemian fiefdom; In 1559 they pledged it to the Saxon Elector August of Saxony . Because the pledge was not redeemed, Schöneck remained with the Electorate of Saxony . The castle Schöneck was badly affected by the frequent pledges and changes of rulership. In 1580 parts of the lower castle were demolished and an electoral hunting lodge was built for it.

In the Thirty Years' War the castle and town of Schöneck were hit hard. In 1632 the troops under General Heinrich von Holk plundered the city, destroyed the castle complex and burned the place down. 1655, the City Council Schoeneck acquired the superior courts in the precincts of the city, in the city forest Haselbrunn and some goods in Eschenbach , as well as the Schriftsässigkeit . In 1680 the city was destroyed again and during the Seven Years' War there was also a fire in 1761 when the Austrian military was quartered, which destroyed large parts of the city and also affected the remains of the castle. In 1765 the last remains of the castle, the old keep , were removed and the stones used to rebuild the city. Only the "Alter Söll" castle hill remained. The last great city fire took place in 1856. Violins have been made in Schöneck since the 17th century. This craft was brought with them by exiles from Bohemia, who were persecuted there because of their Protestant beliefs. A violin making guild was founded in Schöneck in 1730. In addition to violins, other musical instruments such as flutes, saxophones and electrical instruments were produced in the city well into the 20th century. The town of Schöneck belonged to the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Voigtsberg from 1791 to 1856 . After 1856 the city was the seat of the court office in Schöneck . From 1875 Schöneck was part of the Oelsnitz administration .

After several city fires (1632, 1680, 1761 and 1856), Schöneck finally found its way into industrialization in the second half of the 19th century . In 1865, home and factory cigar production was introduced. In 1875 Schöneck was connected to the rail network with the opening of the Chemnitz – Aue – Adorf line. The importance of the station increased with the opening of the Zwotental – Klingenthal line (1875) and the Falkenstein – Muldenberg line (1892). The population grew steadily up to the First World War . In 1912 the city council inaugurated a local court building that was converted into a hospital in the late 1900s. In the last days of the Second World War , the Americans bombarded the city with artillery and occupied it without a fight.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent municipality of Eschenbach was incorporated. Between 1950 and 1996 seven surrounding villages were gradually incorporated into the city. The town of Schöneck / Vogtl came through the second district reform in the GDR . in 1952 to the district of Klingenthal in the Chemnitz district (renamed the district of Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1953 ), which was continued in 1990 as the Saxon district of Klingenthal and was merged into the Vogtland district in 1996.

In 1962 the town of Schöneck / Vogtl. State-approved resort . The first ski lift on the Hohen Reuth was built in 1967. Nine years later, a holiday home was built there. The FDGB - "Ferien- und Erholungsheim Karl Marx" on the Hohen Reuth, which was inaugurated in 1985, was one of the largest new buildings of its kind in the GDR with 1000 beds. Today it is continued as an IFA hotel . Since 1969 the cigar industry has been re-profiled as the music electronics branch. TechniSat Vogtland GmbH was founded on June 1, 1992 in Schöneck / Vogtl. And has been producing HDTV receivers , decryption modules, multi-switches, single-cable solutions and satellite installation products ever since . The ISO 9001: 2008 certified location was modernized in 2011. Between 1995 and 1996 the IFA holiday park was rebuilt and new sports facilities and an adventure pool were built. On December 9th, 2006 the ski area “Skiwelt Schöneck” and in 2015 the “Bikewelt Schöneck” were inaugurated.

The town church of St. Georg was rebuilt in about four years after the last town fire in 1856 and consecrated again in autumn 1859. The organ was built in the same year in the workshop of master Johann Gotthilf Bärmig from Werdau . It has around 2500 pipes in 36 registers, divided into two manuals and a pedal. After interventions in the 1960s that distorted the original sound, the original state was largely restored after 2004.
The bells were originally made by the large bell foundry from Dresden , but were melted down during the First World War . The new bells from the company Schilling & Lattermann from Apolda were consecrated in 1920. The altarpiece is by Adolf Wichmann from Dresden. The apostle figures Peter and Paul (left and right of the altar) and the baptismal font are the only remaining works of art from the previous church.
