Johann Paul Oettel (born January 18, 1699 in Plauen , † December 19, 1771 in Eibenstock ) was a German theologian and chronicler .

Life

Oettel was born in 1699 as the son of a citizen and master pewter in the Vogtland town of Plauen. From the age of four he received his first education, from 1706 in a Latin school. In 1712 he finished his schooling in order to learn the tin foundry trade in Schneeberg . However, the gout forced him to give up this training in 1715, so that from then on he attended the grammar school in Altenburg . He earned his living there as a private teacher and as a choir musician. In 1718 he turned first to Jena and later to Leipzig , where he received private lectures in theology.

In 1725 he was accepted by H. Ludolph Kasten, head forester at Schöneck , as the private tutor of his four sons. After Eibenstock he was appointed as a girl teacher in 1733, where he worked from then until his death. In addition to numerous theological writings such as the multiple published Aufrichtige Nachrichten of the song Jesus my confidence or the Lutheran Paradise Garden , Oettel devoted himself to the history of the city of Eibenstock and the surrounding area. His Eibenstocker Chronik from 1748 is considered a valuable treasure trove for the Ore Mountains local research in general as well as for the coal and steel industry of the area with its numerous hammer mills.

In 1735 Oettel married Johanna Rosina Viehweg, daughter of a shift foreman from Wildenthal , with whom he saw at least three children grow up.

Oettel died in 1771 as "fluent in the Holy Scriptures and the first public teacher at the Jungfrau School in Eybenstock".
