Local elections in Saxony 2019
The local elections in Saxony 2019 took place on May 26, 2019 . Elected representatives for the district councils , city councils , municipal councils and village councils and several mayors .
On the same day, the elections for the European Parliament , the citizenship in Bremen , the Hamburg district assemblies and the municipal elections in Baden-Württemberg , Brandenburg , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Rhineland-Palatinate , Saarland , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia took place.
Electoral system
The municipal elections in Saxony are carried out according to the principle of proportional representation with open lists (Section 21 KomWG). There is the possibility of accumulating and variegating - several votes per candidate can be cast and votes can be distributed over several lists. The voters have three votes for each of the elections, for example for the election of the district council (§ 15 KomWG). A threshold clause does not exist, but the D'Hondt procedure is used for the allocation of seats , which disadvantages smaller parties (Section 21 KomWG).
Starting position
Municipal council elections
In the municipal council elections of 2014 , the CDU received the highest number of votes with 33.3%, while the Free Voters received the second largest share with 23.8% of the votes. They were followed by Die Linke with 16.5%, the SPD with 10.7%, Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen with 5.8%, the FDP with 4.2%, the AfD with 2.5% and the NPD with 1, 9%.
District elections
In the district elections of 2014 , the CDU received 36.1% of the vote. The left got 18.4% of the vote. The SPD came to 12.8%. The electoral associations won 8.8% of the votes . Alliance 90 / The Greens received 7.2% of the vote, the AfD 5.7%, and the FDP 4.98% of the vote. The NPD came to 3.9%, others reached 2.1%.
Results
In the 2019 local elections, 3.37 million residents across Saxony were eligible to vote; Of these, 2.09 million voted, which is a percentage of 62.8%. Overall, in 2019 the CDU totaled 23.8%, the local electoral associations 25.8%, the AfD 15.3%, the Left 12.2%, the Greens 8.4%, the SPD 7 , 6%, the FDP to 4.6% and Die PARTTEI to 1.0%. All others, including the Free Voters , each remained well below 1.0%.
District elections
In the district council elections of the 10 districts, the CDU was the strongest force in eight out of ten district assemblies. It received 28.7% of the vote across all district assemblies. The AfD reached 23.7% and became the strongest party in two districts. In the other places followed the electoral associations with 14.6%, the left with 11.2%, the SPD with 8.3%, the Greens with 6.1%, the FDP with 5.7% and the other parties with 1 , 6%.

Municipal and city council elections
In the city council elections in the independent cities, the CDU reached the most voters in Chemnitz; the Greens succeeded in doing this in Dresden and the left in Leipzig.
