Local elections in Thuringia 2019

The local elections in Thuringia 2019 took place on May 26, 2019 together with the European elections in Germany 2019 . The district councils of the Thuringian districts, the city councils of the independent cities as well as numerous city, community and district councils and district mayors of district communities were newly elected. In addition, 20 full-time and 22 honorary mayors were elected. According to the decision of the Thuringian Constitutional Court of April 11, 2008, there was no five percent hurdle . The voting age was 16 for the first time.

If necessary, the runoff elections took place on June 9, 2019.

The district councils of the 17 Thuringian districts and the city councils of the six independent cities were elected, 1022 seats were to be occupied. The turnout was 60.3% (2014: 51.4%).

The city councils of all Thuringian district towns and municipalities were elected with the exception of Föritztal (elected on October 28, 2018), Drei Gleichen (elected on October 14, 2018) and Silbitz (elected on April 15, 2018), in which the Local council elections had already taken place in 2018. 1,779,143 Thuringians were eligible to vote; the turnout was 60.4%. There was a majority election in 212 municipalities . The strongest party was again the CDU, which received 1,523 seats in the city and community councils.

772 district mayors were to be elected. 574,553 citizens were eligible to vote, the turnout was 62.2%. As a result of the election, the CDU provided 83 mayors of the district, Die Linke 7, SPD 16 and FDP three. 663 elected district or local mayors are non-party.
