history
Volkerode was first mentioned in 1227 as "Wacolderot". The village was owned by the Archbishopric Kurmainz until 1802 , the landlords were the Junkers von Volkerode. From 1802 to 1807 the place became Prussian and then became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia . From 1815 to 1945 he was part of the Prussian province of Saxony. From 1945 to 1949 the place was part of the Soviet occupation zone and from 1949 part of the GDR . From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, Volkerode was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border. Since 1990 the place belongs to the re-established state of Thuringia.
The Hühnerbach enabled the operation of two mills, an upper mill is mentioned as early as the 16th century, and in the 19th century the chicken mill and the damage mill can be identified as grinding mills. After the mills were abandoned, the damage mill became a residential building and the chicken mill was converted into a guesthouse.
Lords of Volkerode
The lords of Volkerode, who belonged to the lower nobility, were initially based on their fortified residence on the Goburg with an associated village. They owned Volkerode (with jurisdiction) and other estates in the area, in Dingelstädt, the Mark Duderstadt and Lutterhusen near Großbartloff. They were also at times lords of the castle at Stein Castle . It is not known exactly from when they lived in Volkerode. In the 16th century, the von Volkerode became Protestant and installed a preacher in the church. In 1692 a Herr von Volkerode was named for the last time, Heinrich Adolf, the family coat of arms shows two vertical spikes. Further representatives of the noble family were:

- Curt von Volkerode (1440)
- Wolf von Volkerode (1577), Field Marshal
- Philipp von Volkerode called Goburg (1604, 1631, 1636)
