history
The first written mention of Wahlhausen dates back to 1243 as "Waldesa". This traditional document from a "Hartung von Waldesa" records a donation to the Germerode monastery . The first spelling of the name was "Waldesa"; this means forest water and is derived from the stream that flows through the place. In 1336 the place is also called "Wasser-Waldesa". When the Hansteiners moved their homes to the surrounding villages after their ancestral castle fell into disrepair, they also built three mansions in Wahlhausen, the lower, middle (or also outer) and upper courtyards. Before these new residences, the village almost disappeared, and so the place was called "Waldes-Haus" with regard to the newly built houses. This resulted in the current form of the name Wahlhausen. The sovereign was Kurmainz until the secularization in 1802 .
The “Hanstein Patrimonial Court ” had its seat in Wahlhausen from 1772 to 1849. From 1802 to 1807 the place became Prussian and then became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia . From 1815 to 1945 he was part of the Prussian province of Saxony . In 1945 the Hanstein estates were expropriated and divided up. Until 1949 the place was part of the Soviet occupation zone and from 1949 part of the GDR . Until the fall of the Wall and reunification in 1989/1990, Wahlhausen was severely affected by the nearby inner-German border. It belonged to the “ 5 km exclusion zone ” along the inner German border . On the night of August 17th to 18th, 1989, Wahlhausen got into the media because of the shooting at Wahlhausen . Unidentified people had fired 91 shots across the German-German border from Bad Sooden-Allendorf in Hesse at Wahlhausen without hitting anyone. The perpetrators and their background have not been clarified. The most common hypotheses are that it was a diversionary maneuver by the Stasi or a stupid prank.
Since 1990 the place belongs to the re-established state of Thuringia. The small family church of those von Hanstein was restored just in time, thus saved from decay and is the community jewel. Professor Otto Linnemann from Frankfurt created glass windows .
The historic center of Wahlhausen was entered as a monument ensemble in the monuments book of the Free State of Thuringia in June 2018 .
