history

Rusteberg Castle on an engraving by Merian 1646

The place arose at the foot of the Mainz castle ruin Rusteberg , which was mentioned in a document in 1123 and belonged to Kurmainz until the secularization in 1802 . In 1743 the brothers Wilhelm and Lorenz Osburg founded a hospital for the poor in Rustenfelde. From 1802 to 1807 the place became Prussian and then became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia . From 1815 to 1945 he was part of the Prussian province of Saxony .

American low-flying bombs and shelling in April 1945 caused considerable damage to residential buildings and outbuildings in the final phase of World War II . At the beginning of July 1945 the place came under the Soviet occupation zone and was part of the GDR from 1949 . From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, Rustenfelde was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border . Since 1990 the place belongs to the re-established state of Thuringia.

On August 17, 2015, a devastating storm flooded more than half the local area. One person died and several houses became uninhabitable.

Blazon : "In gold above kreuzbesteckter, to the head of the shield-reaching, Green Mountain ., Is a left oblique, overthrown, golden sword over silver wave beams, crossed with a golden key with four ring Ride"

Declaration of coat of arms: The green mountain, which fills a large part of the coat of arms, points to the Rusteberg, while the cross placed in the middle of the symbolic mountain refers to the castle, which has only survived as a ruin. The two patron saints of the village church , Peter and Paul , find their correspondence in the key and the sword, while the wavy bar in the base of the shield indicates the Rustebach.
