Kirchgandern is a municipality in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia . It belongs to the administrative community Hanstein-Rusteberg and is located about one kilometer south of the federal highway 38 .
geography
Kirchgandern is located in the Upper Leinegraben about 2.5 km northeast of the border triangle of Hesse-Lower Saxony-Thuringia . The 4.37 km² large community area extends at altitudes from 192 to 329 m above sea level. NN . To the north rises the Pferdeberg (approx. 300 m above sea level ; former place of sacrifice) and to the northeast the Kahle Berg (approx. 325 m above sea level ; location of a chapel). The Leine forms the southwestern border of the municipality and the natural border to the neighboring Thuringian municipalities of Arenshausen in the southeast and Hohengandern in the southwest. Besenhausen in Lower Saxony is to the northwest . The Gänsebach rises in the forest towards Kahler Berg and flows through the village in an east-west direction and flows into the Leine a little west of it . It also divides the village into two halves: the northern half of the village is known as the upper village , the southern half as the lower village .
To the west of the village runs the state road 1001, which leads south to the federal road 80 and which has to the north-west via roads connected to it through Lower Saxony to the Neu-Eichenberg-Friedland junction of the federal freeway 38 in Hesse near Marzhausen .
The Neuwerth settlement to the southeast in the direction of Arenshausen belongs to the location .
Division of space
Kirchgandern has a total area of 439 hectares . Of this, only 44 ha (10%) are settled and 21 ha (4.8%) are traffic areas . Settlement and traffic areas together have a size of 65 ha (14.8%). The largest proportion of the area is made up of vegetation with 368 ha (83.8%). The waters make up the smallest proportion of the area with 6 ha (1.4%).

The area of vegetation decreased from 381 to 368 hectares between 2015 and 2018. It has a share of 83.8% (368 ha) of the total area. Agriculture accounts for 76.4% of the vegetation area . The forest makes up 19% and the remaining wood around 3%. Unland or areas without vegetation account for 1.6% of the vegetation area.

The settlement area increased by 14 ha between 2015 and 2018, from 30 to 44 ha. It accounts for 10% (44 ha) of the total area. The largest share of the settlement area is made up of sports, leisure and recreational areas with 29.5%, which has increased significantly in recent years. This is followed by residential space with 38.6% and industrial and commercial space with a total of 25%. Areas with particularly functional use make up a small percentage at 1 ha. The cemetery has also lost its total area. The rest is allotted to smaller areas with other uses.

The traffic area decreased slightly from 2015 to 2018. It has a share of 4.8% (21 ha) of the total area of 439 ha. The smaller share of the traffic area is made up of roads, with 47.6%. The rest are paths and other areas used by traffic, which make up 57.1% of the traffic area.

The body of water in Kirchgandern has remained constant over the years. It has a share of 1.4% (6 ha) of the total area. Running waters (Leine, Gänsebach) make up almost 100% of the water area. The rest are standing water with less than 1% of the water surface.
history
Kirchgander was first mentioned in a document in 1118. Kirchgandern takes its name from the original settlement "Ganderaha". "Gander" means gander and "Aha" is the name for water, so the place name means "located on the Gänsebach". The village was given the nickname "Church" because its church was the main church of the spiritual ban. The church is one of the oldest churches in the vicinity, according to a document it was built in 1300. In the course of time, the place name "Ganderaha" developed into today's place name Kirchgandern. From 1802 to 1807 the place became Prussian and then became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia . From 1815 he was part of the Prussian province of Saxony . 1945 to 1949 the place belonged to the Soviet occupation zone and from 1949 became part of the GDR . From 1952 until the fall of the Wall and reunification in 1989/1990, Kirchgandern was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border. Among other things, the Way of the Cross, located directly on the border, and the Magdalenen Chapel from 1852 were no longer accessible and were destroyed by decay and destruction. In the 1990s the Way of the Cross and the chapel were rebuilt. Since 1990 the place belongs to the re-established state of Thuringia.
In Kirchgandern there used to be many handicraft businesses such as bakeries, butchers, a mill, grocery stores, restaurants, a cigar factory , doctors, hairdressers, a hat factory, tailors, a shoemaker, a plate maker, carpenters, a blacksmith , painters, plumbers, a trucking company and much more more. Kirchgandern was also comparatively well equipped with two schools in the field of education.
Over the years, a lively club life has developed in Kirchgandern. So z. B. the warrior club, the pigeon club, the virgin club and the cycling club, which no longer exist today. The singing club, the dog sports club, the VFR sports club, the old men Kirchgandern, the forest community, the Kolping family, the friends' association Kirchgandern and the volunteer fire brigade Kirchgandern are still very active today.
After the fall of the Wall , Kirchgandern was included in the village renewal program; the community developed an industrial area and built a village community center in which assemblies, club meetings and celebrations take place today.

Municipal council
The parish council of Kirchgandern consists of eight parish council members.
In the municipal council election on May 26, 2019, 612 votes (61.6%) went to the CDU , and 382 votes (38.4%) to the FDP / Free Voting Community. There were a total of 994 valid votes. 479 people were entitled to vote. A total of 357 voters voted, with 334 valid and 23 invalid votes being counted. The turnout was 74.5%.

The mayor (honorary) is Frank Wandt ( CDU ). He was elected with 281 votes (95.3%) in the mayoral election on November 25, 2018. 14 votes (4.7%) went to other applicants. 491 people were entitled to vote. A total of 300 voters voted, whereby 295 valid and 5 invalid votes were counted. The turnout was 61.1%.

Kirchgandern is a member of the Hanstein-Rusteberg administrative community based in the neighboring community of Hohengandern . The administrative community was founded on May 4, 1993 and is used to deal with the administrative affairs of the 14 member communities.

Blazon : "In blue a silver ganter ready to fly with a hovering, shortened silver bar growing out of the neck to the right and left, covered with a red heart shield with a silver six-spoke wheel."
On the Redenden coat of arms you can see a goose with outstretched wings (wings are shown in a view from below), the neck and head of the goose combined with a crossbar to form a cross as a symbol of faith and the church. The heart shield with the silver wheel symbolizes the centuries-old affiliation to the Elector and Archdiocese of Mainz , thus to the Eichsfeld .

Kirchgandern is relatively well positioned in the education sector with a school and in the education sector with a day-care center . The day care center "Pfiffikus" Kirchgandern is a public day care center run by the municipality of Kirchgandern. It was opened in 1953 and expanded in recent years. The facility is located south of the village center on Heiligenstädter Straße and has an elongated outdoor area (renovation in summer 2018) with play facilities, two dining rooms, a gym and various group rooms. The Arenshausen regular school is a state school which is run by the Eichsfeld district . The school is located about 1 kilometer south-east of the village center on Bundesstraße 80 within the Kirchgandern district. The school yard and the sports hall as well as the Kirchgandern-Arenshausen sports complex border the school building .
