Steinbach is a municipality in the Leinetal administrative community in the Eichsfeld district of Thuringia .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1297. The community belonged to the Prussian province of Saxony until 1945 .

1945 to 1949 the place was part of the Soviet occupation zone and from 1949 part of the GDR . From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, Steinbach was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border. Since 1990 the place belongs to the re-established state of Thuringia.

The honorary mayor of Mauritius Hünermund (CDU) was elected on June 6, 2010. Jörg Schneider has been in office since 2016. Hiltrud Dräger was the mayor from 2004 to 2010.

  • Catholic St. Mauritius
    Church The baroque church was built in 1779. The altar and the organ front are also baroque.
  • Etzelsbach Chapel
    The neo-Gothic pilgrimage chapel was built in 1898 by Paschalis Gratze . The furnishings are essentially early modern. The chapel became famous for the so-called horse pilgrimage across the country's borders.
