Lenterode is a municipality in the Uder administrative community in the Eichsfeld district of Thuringia .
geography
location
Lenterode is located in the valley of the Asbach, a left tributary of the Leine . The Schierbach rises in the Höhberg and flows into the Asbach in the village. Neighboring towns are Uder in the north, Wüstheuterode in the south and Röhrig in the south-west.
Forests and mountains
Lenterode is surrounded by three wooded mountains. The Röhringsberg (487 m) in the north-west with the Höhberg has a spring that supplies the place with water. In the east lies the Knappberg (445.7 m) and the Lengenberg (with the Great Lichtenbühl (460.8 m) and the Little Lichtenbühl (375.6 m)), here the Griesbach rises. The mountainous area around Lenterode is ideal for hiking.
Geological evolution
Lenterode is surrounded by the middle red sandstone . There is a small break in this rock under Lenterode. The Upper Buntsandstein joins the mountainous hills, while the wooded mountain peaks are made of Lower Muschelkalk .
history
Lenterode was first mentioned in a document in 1260, the name denotes the clearing of a Lenthilde . In a document from around 1260 a dean Gernoth, scholaster Geverhardus and cantor Ernst from St. Martinstift in Heiligenstadt are mentioned when they settled the dispute between the knight Amelung von Lencheroth and the Walkenried monastery . One of the witnesses is a Konrad von Lenterode .
The place belonged to Kurmainz until the secularization , from 1815 to 1945 it was part of the Prussian province of Saxony. In 1945 the place came to the Soviet occupation zone and was part of the GDR from 1949. From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, Lenterode was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border. Since 1990 the place belongs to Thuringia.

Culture and sights
Festivities
The fair takes place in the community hall on the fourth Sunday in May and November. The event begins with the traditional fair excavation on the Anger and ends at the same place with the fair burial.
In 2010 the 750th anniversary of the town was celebrated with a festival week from May 14th to 24th, 2010. The highlight of the festival week was the play The TV Heroes by a specially formed amateur play group.
Attractions
Sights of the place include the Katharinenkirche with a baroque altar.
The historic customs house in Lenterode with a gate house, guard room, customs office, overnight accommodation and restaurant as well as relaxation. Probably built around 1823, it served to enforce the customs regulations on the Eichsfeld control district line between Hesse and Prussia.
The Lenteröder Warte , a former watchtower on the border.
