Arenshausen is a municipality in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia . It belongs to the Hanstein-Rusteberg administrative community .

history

The original founding and development of Arenshausen is largely in the dark. When the Kingdom of Thuringia fell in 531 , to which the area belonged in recent years, a strong influx of Franks began from the west . The place names were also introduced by the Franks. During this time, the place was ruled by a noble family, a knight dynasty with names: "Arns", "Aro", "Arnfried", "Arnwald" etc. (see "Place names of the Eichsfeldes" by Dr. E. Müller). The ending of the villages founded after them in "hausen" or "bi den husun" is seen as particularly characteristic Franconian. They mostly refer to a settlement with a manor house. In old documents the village is often mentioned as Arnshusen or Arenshusen. The von Arenshusen family lived in a fortified courtyard, the so-called "Wallhof". This was on the Hopfenberg in a high position.

The first documentary mention took place from 1189 to February 18, 1190. The secularization ended the rule of Kurmainz in 1802. The place finally came to Prussia in 1815, it belonged to the administrative district of Erfurt of the province of Saxony . When the railway was built in 1867, foundations and old vaulted cellars were excavated. From the special geographical location of the place it can be concluded that Arenshausen is one of the oldest villages of the second settlement period of the Eichsfeld.

Arenshausen was occupied by the US Army on April 9, 1945 . This was preceded by attacks by fighter bombers and artillery fire. Four civilians died and numerous buildings were destroyed or damaged.
