Gerbershausen is a municipality in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia . It belongs to the Hanstein-Rusteberg administrative community . The district of Rothenbach belongs to the community .

location

Gerbershausen is located in the west of the Eichsfeld district in a valley between the heights of the Höifteges (with the Teufelskanzel : 452 m) in the southwest and the Upper Eichsfeld (with the Hennefeste: 446 m and the Hamelsberg: 421 m) in the northeast. The valley around Gerbershausen itself belongs to the Fretteröder Keupersenke . The Geibbach rises in the locality , together with the Kälberbach , which flows into the Steinsbach, a branch of the Leine, near Oberstein. Neighboring towns are Bornhagen in the west, Arenshausen in the north and Fretterode in the southeast. The place is connected via the state road 1002 to the federal road 80 south of Hohengandern .

history

The name "Gerwardeshusen" was mentioned in Aloys Schmidt's document book as early as 997. But this is demonstrably not the local Gerbershausen. For a long time it was assumed that it was first mentioned in documents in 1120, because Wenck's document book from 1789 contains the following tradition: "In 1120 the noble Mrs. Lucia gave 2 Hufen land in Gerwardeshuson to the Helmarshausen monastery." This year was adopted in their works not only by G. Reischel, but also by Walter Rassow and Johann Wolf.

As far as we know from March 2017, the two above-mentioned localities are not the current Eichsfeld village of Gerbershausen. Hartmut Hoffmann deals in his book "Helmarshausen und Corvey" with the monastery Helmarshausen and its surroundings. He found out that the Gerwardeshuson, which appears in the donation of Lady Lucia, is a desert near Friedland. Niels Petersen from the University of Göttingen also confirms this in his work, which appeared in 2018. As early as 1956, Walter Prochaska spoke in his "Eichsfelder Heimatbuch" of a secure documentary mention of the village of Gerbershausen in 1221 . Archbishop Siegfried II of Mainz confirms in document no. 213 on November 11, 1221 the possessions of the Beuren monastery. Gerwardishuen is mentioned in 1221 when a certain Heinrich Hessone von Rosdorf received goods from Beuren in exchange for possessions located elsewhere.

The year 1221 is therefore considered to be the guaranteed date of the first documentary mention .

As an Electoral Mainz fiefdom, Gerbershausen gradually came to the Lords of Hanstein between 1348 and 1443 . Rothenbach , located in the immediate vicinity, belonged to the Hanstein family as early as 1362 as a Hessian fief. After the village of Rothenbach was given up, they built an estate there in the 16th century. From 1578 to 1771 the place was also the seat of the general court of Hanstein. In 1771 the seat of the court was moved to Wahlhausen. After the Reformation, the Protestant pastors Johann Kramer (1585) and Georg Holzmann (1594) are mentioned in Gerbershausen, and in the 17th century a Catholic pastor is appointed by the Eichsfeld Episcopal Commissariat .

The place was part of Kurmainz until the secularization and from 1802 to 1945 part of the Prussian province of Saxony and in the meantime belonged to the Kingdom of Westphalia from 1806 to 1813. From 1945 Gerbershausen was part of the Soviet occupation zone and from 1949 the GDR . From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, the place was near the inner German border in the restricted area . Since 1990 the place belongs to the re-established state of Thuringia.

Noble family von Gerbershausen

In the 14th and 15th centuries, a noble family can be traced in Gerbershausen. In 1362 the von Gerbershausen family gave their castle (house) and all their possessions to Archbishop Gerlach of Mainz and received them back as a man fief. It is not documented when the noble family died out. Representatives of the noble family are:

  • Konrad von Gerbershausen (Gerwordeshausen) (1362) with his sons Konrad, Hermann, Syman, Hans and Dyle
  • Kurt von Gerbershausen (1363)
  • Tile von Gerbershausen (1443) sells his Vorwerk in Gerbershausen to Heinrich von Hanstein
  • Engelhard and Tile von Gerbershausen (1486) are enfeoffed with goods in Martinfeld by Landgrave Wilhelm von Hessen (whether Thilo von Gewershausen, who was mentioned in 1452, can be assigned to the local noble family is not certain)

Catholic Parish Church of St. John the Baptist

On the eastern edge and above the village, built in the years 1777-1779 is baroque Catholic church, St. John the Baptist ordained hall building . The church was consecrated in 1779 by Auxiliary Bishop Eckardt. In 1934 it was extended to the east by a transept and a choir to form a cross. The building is mostly made of stone-faced ashlar masonry. The rectangular nave ends in the east with a triangle in the choir. In the west there is a slate roof turret with a lantern . The nave, transept and choir are vaulted with a barrel vault with stitch caps . The seven yokes are separated by belt arches . The high altar was made in the 19th century using parts from the 18th century. The stalls are baroque with beautifully carved cheeks. The organ was built around 1905 by Louis Krell from Duderstadt and renovated in 1996 by Karl Brode from Heiligenstadt . In the churchyard wall there is the lintel stone of a previous building with a round-arched vestibule, the date 1577 and the Hanstein coat of arms.
