history

The Wehnder waiting
Wehnde estate around 1860, Alexander Duncker collection

Wehnde was first mentioned in a document in 1238. Wehnde belonged to Kurmainz from 1573 until the secularization of 1802 and was one of the five judicial villages of the von Wintzingerode on the Bodenstein . From 1802 to 1807 the place became Prussian and then became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia . From 1815 to 1945 he was part of the Prussian province of Saxony .

In 1945 the place came to the Soviet occupation zone and was part of the GDR from 1949 . In the same year, following an agreement between the Soviet and English occupying powers, the border between the former Prussian provinces of Saxony (now Thuringia) and Hanover (formerly the Kingdom of Hanover and now Lower Saxony) was corrected and the Duderstädter Wald was added to the Wehnde district. From 1945 Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von Wintzingerode-Knorr was expropriated, the family fled to West Germany and in 1948 the manor house was blown up on the basis of order 209 of the SMAD . From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, Wehnde was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border. Since 1990 the place belongs to the re-established state of Thuringia.

Wehnder Wait

The Wehnder Warte is on the road from Tastungen to Wehnde . In 1413, Martin von Worbis and his brother Hannes, co-owners of Bodenstein Castle , and the city of Duderstadt signed a contract to build a watch tower, but the building was not completed until 1430. The tower was manned by a guard for decades in order to recognize the dangers for the castle and Duderstadt. The tower is still well preserved and restored today. The former tower entrance can be reached via an external staircase and the internal staircase leads to a viewing platform. From here you have a wide view over the southern Untereichsfeld to the Göttinger Gleichen and the Upper Harz with the Brocken .

Wehnde manor

The castle-like Gut Wehnde was built around 1640, renovated in the 19th century and was the ancestral seat of the barons of Wintzingerode-Knorr . Large agricultural lands, forests and the Oberwildungen Vorwerk belonged to the estate . In 1945 the manor fell under the land reform and was expropriated, the land was divided between new farmers and small farms. The mansion was finally demolished in 1946.

coat of arms

Blazon : “In blue on a silver mountain, a silver brick tower; the mountain is covered with lintel rafters with two green oak leaves. "

The heraldic stylized tower symbolizes the Wehnder Warte located in the immediate vicinity. The two oak leaves in the silver hill indicate that it belongs to the Eichsfeld and also to the old oak at the former estate.
