Großbartloff is a municipality in the Thuringian district of Eichsfeld . It belongs to the administrative community of Westerwald-Obereichsfeld .
Geographical location
Großbartloff is located in the Obereichsfeld south of the Westerwald ridge in the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park, about 15 kilometers south of Heilbad Heiligenstadt . The location is surrounded by numerous mountains of the Obereichsfelder Muschelkalkplatte , such as the Eichberg in the southwest, the Schimberg (457.1 m) in the northwest, the Klusberg (443.2 m) in the north and the Heiligenberg (435.0 m) in the southeast. The Thuringian Basin lies further east in the direction of Mühlhausen . The village is traversed by the Lutter , a northern tributary of the Frieda .
history
Großbartloff was first mentioned in a document in 1306. The village was almost completely destroyed in a fire in 1640. Today's church was built in 1740 . For centuries the village belonged to the administrative area of Kurmainz . From 1802 to 1807 the place became Prussian and then came to the Kingdom of Westphalia ( Canton Großbartloff ). From 1815 he was part of the Prussian province of Saxony .
In 1902 Großbartloff was the first place in the district to receive the first water pipe.
On April 7 and 9, 1945, Großbartloff received American artillery fire . The church got three direct hits, numerous residential buildings were destroyed. Four civilians died, including two children. On April 9th, the place was occupied without a fight.
In 1949 construction began on the first new school in the New District. It was closed in 1997.
From July 1945 to 1949 the place belonged to the Soviet occupation zone SBZ and from 1949 became part of the GDR . From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, Großbartloff was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border. Since 1990 the place belongs to the re-established state of Thuringia. A flood on July 23, 2004 caused severe property damage.
At the end of the 19th century, Großbartloff received a railway stop as part of the construction of the cannon railway. It was shut down in the 1990s.
In 1994 the construction of the new multi-purpose hall was completed ("Klusberghalle"). It is one of the few halls in Eichsfeld that is owned and administered by the village and not the district.

Sports
The Großbartloff sports club was founded in 1922 and today has 280 members (as of December 31, 2015). The SVG is divided into five sections. These are: football, badminton, table tennis, women's sports and children's sports. The club is the largest club in town. The sports club is managed by a 12-member board. The sports facilities Klusberghalle and sports field are maintained by the community and through the work of the members.

Attractions
One of the sights of Großbartloff is the Lutter waterfall located on the eastern edge of the village and around 10 meters high . The historic town center was entered as a monument ensemble in the monuments book of the Free State of Thuringia in June 2018 .
