Location of the community of Asbach-Sickenberg in the Eichsfeld district | ||
Asbach-Sickenberg is a municipality in the Uder administrative community in the Thuringian district of Eichsfeld . Asbach and Sickenberg are two of the few villages in the Eichsfeld district that do not belong to the historic Eichsfeld .
Geographical location
Asbach-Sickenberg is located near the Hessian- Thuringian border in the northern foothills of the Gobert ridge . The Alte Hainsbach flows through Asbach as the eastern tributary of the Werra and runs through the nearby Bad Sooden-Allendorf . Sickenberg lies above the Walse valley , another eastern tributary of the Werra.
Community structure
The community was formed on July 1, 1950 through the merger of the previously independent political communities Asbach and Sickenberg .
history
Asbach was first mentioned in 1284 and Sickenberg was first mentioned in 1298. The places belonged to the office and castle district of the landgrave Altenstein Castle (Hessian Office Allendorf ). Since the 16th century, both villages formed a parish. The previously Hessian villages Asbach and Sickenberg came to the Soviet occupation zone and thus to Thuringia in 1945 as part of border corrections ( Wanfrieder Agreement ) . On July 1, 1950, the two places merged to form the new municipality of Asbach / Sickenberg. The name was changed on May 1, 1992, when the municipality of Asbach / Sickenberg was renamed Asbach-Sickenberg .

Culture and sights
Museums
- Immediately after the opening of the inner-German border, the " Grenzmuseum Schifflersgrund " was created. It is located between Bad Sooden-Allendorf and Sickenberg directly on the former inner-German border. The Altenstein castle ruins , which were still inhabited in the 1940s and used as a forester's lodge, were inaccessible due to the border location and had already fallen into serious disrepair in 1990.
- The listed Hof Sickenberg - with a historic bakery. In the Hofcafe, the operators have set up an exhibition on the history of Sickenberg.
All three destinations mentioned are on the Premiumweg 16 Asbach-Sickenberg hiking trail, which was opened in 2014 and leads through Eichsfeldische Schweiz.
