Sickenberg is a district of the municipality Asbach-Sickenberg in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia . It is one of the few villages in the Eichsfeld district that does not belong to the historic Eichsfeld .

geography

Sickenberg is located on the southwestern border of the district with Hesse . The place is on a red sandstone plateau above the Werra valley at the foot of the 496 m high stone

history

Sickenberg 1284 first Sigkenberg documented together with the adjacent upper and lower Asbach. In the 15th century the place was deserted, then the lords of Bischoffshausen received it as a fief and in the 18th century it belonged to the Hessian office of Allendorf .

The previously Hessian village of Sickenberg was incorporated into the Soviet occupation zone and thus into Thuringia in 1945 as part of border adjustments as a result of the Wanfried Agreement . On July 1, 1950, the once independent municipality of Sickenberg was incorporated into the new municipality of Asbach / Sickenberg . From 1952 to 1990 the place was affected by the close inner German border . The nearby Schifflersgrund is reminiscent of the border and division of Germany. On May 1, 1992, the name of this community was changed to Asbach-Sickenberg .

Culture and sights

  • The listed Hof Sickenberg - with a historic bakery. In the Hofcafé, the operators have set up an exhibition on the history of Sickenberg.
  • The Schifflersgrund Border Museum was built immediately after the inner-German border opened . It is located between Bad Sooden-Allendorf and Sickenberg directly on the former inner-German border.
