Marth is located at the southern foot of the Rusteberg , still above the Leinetal about 8 kilometers west of Heilbad Heiligenstadt . The place is connected to the federal highway 80 via the district roads K 104 and K 105 .

The district of Marth also includes the small settlements of Hessenau and Eckstieg in the Leinetal , the former meadow mill and the “Miwepa” industrial area near the former Chausseewärterhaus, now the location of an Arenshausen packaging plant.

history

The place Marth belonged to Rusteberg Castle , a heavily fortified medieval castle complex . In the 15th century the castle was expanded into a modern fortress. It was the center of the Electoral Mainz administration of the Eichsfeld and the residence of the administrator. In 1540 the administration was moved to Heiligenstadt and the castle was neglected. After the office building at the foot of the mountain was built, the castle was given up.

From 1802 to 1945 Marth was part of the Prussian province of Saxony. 1945 to 1949 the place came under the Soviet occupation zone and was part of the GDR from 1949 . From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, Marth was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border. Since 1990 the place belongs to Thuringia.
