Location of the municipality of Kirchworbis in the Eichsfeld district | ||
Kirchworbis is a municipality in the Eichsfeld-Wipperaue administrative community in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia .
geography
Kirchworbis is located in the Eichsfeld basin south of the Langenberg ( 462.5 m above sea level ), a foothill of the Ohmgebirge . The Wipper flows south in front of the village . The place is only two kilometers southeast of the former district town of Worbis and is closely connected with it. The former B 80 runs through Kirchworbis . In the neighboring village of Breitenworbis there is a slip road to the A 38 (Südharzautobahn) .
history
Kirchworbis is first mentioned in 1209 as Kirchworvece and is an old church village. The place reappears a second time almost thirty years later, this time under the names Kirchworbeze and Kirchworveze . It is considered certain that the second part of the name is of Slavic origin and can be derived from the word wrba (willow). Accordingly, the place was laid out by the Wends at the time of the Great Migration , after they had moved into the area abandoned by the Germanic tribes. Already in 1055 the Wends settled in the area of today's Eichsfeld. To distinguish between the three places Worbis , Breitenworbis and the desert Hugenworbis , the village of Kirchworbis was named. It is assumed that Kirchworbis is of older origin or that the church occupied a higher rank. With the second mention in 1238, it then appears as a parish village, because the document speaks of a Hunoldus, vicarius in Kirchworveze , who appeared as a witness. In the jurisdiction book of the Martinus Foundation from 1675 it is mentioned that the provost of the Martinus Foundation in Heiligenstadt was the patron of the parish church of St. Martin. It is possible that Heiligenstadt had had sovereignty over the parish village since 1276, when Archbishop Ruthard awarded the provost of the monastery five parish churches, although Kirchworbis was not explicitly mentioned. It belonged to the secularization to Kurmainz and in 1802 Prussian. After brief membership of the Kingdom of Westphalia , Kirchworbis was part of the Prussian province of Saxony until 1945 . The parish church was rebuilt in 1913.
During the Second World War , more than 100 women and men from Poland and the Ukraine had to do forced labor in agriculture and in the Rhode knitting mill from 1940 .
1945 to 1949 the place came under the Soviet occupation zone and was part of the GDR from 1949 . From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, the place was close to the inner-German border. In 2002 the Valentinus Chapel was restored.
