The district of Mackenrode was first mentioned in a document on January 1st, 1236. In the 47 × 33 cm document that is kept in the Hessian State Archives in Marburg, Archbishop Siegfried III. the tithes of Witzenhausen and Karmannshausen to the Cistercian monastery Marienfeld in Münsterland , with which the brothers Dietrich Vitztum von Rusteberg and Heidenreich von Hanstein were enfeoffed . As compensation, he transfers the village of Eichstruth, the tithe to Mackenrode and interest crops to Nesselröden and Langenhagen to the brothers . The place belonged to Kurmainz until the secularization , in 1802 it became Prussian and in 1807 it became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia . From 1815 to 1945 it was part of the Prussian province of Saxony . 1945 to 1949 the place came to the Soviet occupation zone.

The current districts of Hennigerode and Weidenbach also came to the SBZ in the Wanfried Agreement and, like Mackenrode, became part of the GDR from 1949 . From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, Mackenrode was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border. In 1974 Weidenbach was incorporated with Hennigerode. Since 1990 the community has belonged to the newly established state of Thuringia.
