Location of Langenhagen in Lower Saxony

Langenhagen is a place in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony and is located on the district road 110 between Fuhrbach and Hilkerode , five kilometers northeast of Duderstadt . The village, which belongs to the Untereichsfeld , has been part of the city of Duderstadt since January 1, 1973 and has around 500 residents.

history

Langenhagen was first mentioned in writing on January 1st, 1236 in a document issued in Hasungen Monastery .

The document also mentions that Volkwin von Schwalenberg and Adolf von Waldeck were given by Archbishop Siegfried III. Annual income worth 50 Malter Korn each took as fief in villa Langenhagen .

Of the 24 houses that Langenhagen counted in 1609, only three were still inhabited at the end of the Thirty Years War (1648). In 1670, however, the population had grown to 130. The village, which was politically and judicially dependent on the city of Duderstadt between 1432 and 1802 , was one of eleven council villages. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, Langenhagen had considerably less than the wars of that time, e.g. B. by looting and contribution payments .

Due to its location in a valley, the place often had to deal with floods and floods. For this reason, two retention basins were built in 1908 , known as the large and small dams.

Towards the end of the Second World War , a night fighter control center was set up in Langenhagen on the boundary between Langenhagen and Duderstadt in the district of Klingenburg ("drone" position). It stood on one of the highest points in the area (about 300 m above sea level ), about 50 m across from today's Franz von Assisi Chapel of the Heinz Sielmann Foundation on Gut Herbigshagen. The facility was not attacked during the war. All military installations were dismantled by the British armed forces after the end of the war. The accommodations belonging to the position were in the place. It was equipped with

Langenhagen experienced a decline in population during the war years due to the number of dead and missing persons due to the war (27 dead in World War I ; 62 dead and missing in World War II). To commemorate the war victims, the community had a memorial in the form of a cross built in front of the cemetery entrance in 1954, on which the names of those who died in the two world wars are carved.

Until it was incorporated into the city of Duderstadt in 1973, Langenhagen was an independent municipality.

In 1988, a small, medieval castle site of the former Klingenburg was discovered in the town valley, approx. 1000 m southwest of Langenhagen. A hill of ruins with a section of weir ditch on a small land spur revealed the position of the castle. Discovered finds date back to the 15th and 16th centuries, the castle was officially named Clingenborg from 1420 until the late 16th century .

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Langenhagen
Blazon : "In green over a silver (white) shield base, covered with a blue wave bar, a growing golden (yellow) dam tower, each accompanied by a silver (white) spruce."
Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms designed by Fritz Reimann from Fuhrbach and approved by the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior on December 5, 1950 is a reminder of the retention basins built in 1908, which are known as large and small dams, with their surrounding green spaces and an outdoor swimming pool. The tower is one of the landmarks of the place.

Culture and sights

church

St. Lawrence Church

The Catholic Church of St. Laurentius was built in 1865. It was preceded by a baroque church from 1681. The sandstone building of the St. Laurentius Church is one of the most interesting neo-Romanesque churches in the lower area due to its unusual interior architecture . This becomes clear, for example, through the west portal flanked by Doric columns and the church roof, whose dark- framed purlins are visible in the interior up to the roof ridge. At right angles to the nave there is also a support structure made of three pieces of wood joined together, which were hung decoratively in the roof structure. Another special feature is the font, which is made of red sandstone . The basin of the baptismal font is located on four Doric columns and is closed by a roof-shaped wooden lid covered with shingle. From the semicircular apse you can see three colored glass windows, the motifs of which are depictions of Mary, Laurentius and the Holy Trinity.

Parish

Until October 31, 2014 the parish “St. Laurentius Langenhagen “part of a pastoral care unit with the neighboring communities of Fuhrbach and Brochthausen. In the course of the reform program Eckpunkt 2020 implemented by the Diocese of Hildesheim , this pastoral care unit became part of the parish “St. Sebastian “ merged in Rhumspringe .
