Hilkerode is a place in the district of Göttingen in southern Lower Saxony . The village, which belongs to the Untereichsfeld , has been part of the city of Duderstadt since January 1, 1973 and has around 950 inhabitants.

Geographical location

Hilkerode is located about six kilometers northeast of Duderstadt in the Eller valley, east of the hilly landscape of the Hellberge with the Längenberg (approx. 210 m), Bornberg (approx. 220 m) and Mühlenberg (approx. 240 m). The ridge of the Rotenberg with the Ankeröder Berg (227 m) extends to the north . The nature reserve Rhumeaue / Ellerniederung / Gillersheimer Bachtal runs through the district.

The former inner-German border and today's Lower Saxony- Thuringia border ran not far to the southeast . Neighboring locations are Rhumspringe in the north, Brochthausen in the east, Langenhagen in the south and Breitenberg in the southwest.

history

The dating of the first mention of Hilkerode has caused difficulties for a long time. It was assumed that this took place in a document from the Counts of Everstein in 1224 , in which they were given their goods in a place called Helekenroth, with the consent of the dukes of Braunschweig as the overlord , to the Walkenried monastery . In addition to Helekenroth, other goods are named in the document, such as Kemnade, Imbshausen, Wallshausen and Pendelbach, all of which are located in the Weser-Leine area. The geographical location of these places cast into doubt that Helekenroth should actually be Hilkerode, and ultimately the deserted Helekenroth near Seesen was determined as the place given in the 13th century source. The new first mention took place almost 100 years later, in 1317. In this document, issued by Konrad von dem Hagen , the sale of the grain pension for 18 marks to Messrs Heyneke von Bernshausen is stated, Hilkerode is named under the name Hiddekerode . In 1392 Hilkerode was bought into the possession of the city of Duderstadt. The sale was carried out by the Burgmannen von dem Hagen. They left Hilkerode to the wise men deme rade der stad Dudierstad, to eynem eternal ervenkoype . From then on Hilkerode was to function as one of the Duderstadt council villages. This meant that the village was also obliged to perform certain services, such as driving the Harzberger Steinbier, bringing in the Breitenberg tithes , carrying out the Ruhr and seed transport, and importing winter and summer fruits to Duderstadt. With regard to its relatively large distance from the protective city, Hilkerode was outside the Duderstädter Knick, the broad, thick protective hedge, the village was dependent on a certain self-protection. To this end, ditches, palisades, curtains and gates were built. Today, for example, the Heckenweg, which was previously called the Knickweg, reminds of these circumstances. In 1550 the Obertor, 1591 the Mahntor and 1779 the Kreuztor appear as gates in the village registers. Here, too, property and street names have survived to this day. A watch tower was probably located south of Hilkerode on the Hägerberg or the sandy shore. In an emergency, signals were sent from here to the other control rooms, including the Rotenwarte, which then alerted the city of Duderstadt. From the 16th century, the Hilkeröder Warte lost its importance and finally passed into the possession of Adam Zinsen 'widow in 1568.

From the beginning of the 19th century under the administration of the Duderstadt office, Hilkerode was an independent municipality since 1885. Since the reorganization of the district of Göttingen on January 1, 1973, Hilkerode became part of the unified community of Duderstadt. At that time it was initially part of the Duderstadt joint community , which existed until December 31, 1972. One united in the integrated community to a loose association, which performed the tasks of the respective sphere of activity of its member locations. For example, cash transactions and the collection of taxes were carried out by the joint municipality, while the budgetary rights were left to the respective member municipality. Until the elections of March 25, 1973, the previous Hilkerode councilor remained in office. A year earlier he dealt with the land consolidation procedure in the Pöhlder district for the first time . It was argued that a procedure in the Hilkeröder Flur should not be used, as the steep slopes would cause considerable additional costs. Furthermore, the name changes of some local streets were dealt with, as Hilkerode's affiliation with the city of Duderstadt made it necessary that each street name could only appear once. Among other things, this caused the main road to be called Hilkeröder Strasse, the road to Brochthausen Strasse in Ellertal, the road by the former police building Glockenstrasse and the road at Mühlenwasser Am Euwer. The last meeting of the municipal council took place on December 27, 1972. At that time, Duderstadt was informed that the road to the school site was to be expanded, including the construction of a retaining wall at Mühlenwasser, the construction of a sidewalk between the school and the Protestant church, the piping of the trenches to Hummelborn and the Kreuztor, as well as the through-town and the road to Brochthausen realize.

Near Hilkerodes are deserted villages of places Ankerode in the Northeast and Kreterode the east of the village. In the course of the abandonment of both places, which took place in the 14th and early 15th centuries, their residents settled in Hilkerode. Today the annual “Tierrat” of the Cretan heirs reminds of this relationship.

Catholic Church of St. John Baptist

If you look at the history of the church buildings in Hilkerode, you will inevitably come across parallels to those in Brochthausen , except that Hilkerode had one more previous church. There were three predecessor buildings of today's Catholic Church, named after St. John the Baptist , the first of which is dated to 1422 and was a house of God in the Gothic architectural style. The following building from 1758 consisted of a baroque style church, while the third building, built between 1848 and 1851, was a hall church , which, however, had to be demolished in 1968 due to its dilapidation. A baroque high altar was also housed in it, which came from the Herzberg Welfenschloss . After the former hall church was demolished , the parish church of St. Johannes Baptist was built between 1968 and 1969 according to plans by Friedrich Zwingmann from Karlsruhe . It represents a two-storey, irregularly polygonal church building with a sacred central building and functional rooms. A chapel for the fallen was set up in the basement. A chapel for the dead and a baptistery were placed in the west-facing bell tower , which is accentuated by the incidence of light from a raised window in the tower. The church space itself presents itself in a simple picture, has few materials and thus relies on clear structural forms. A spatial center is realized by the altar area, which is occupied by an ambo , a table for gifts and sedilies . The tabernacle in the form of a bronze triangular stele is kept in a separate chapel, whereby the theme of the creation order of the tabernacle was taken up again in the windows of the church. Another part of the church is a figure of the Madonna made of oak, which is located on a side altar, as well as the bell , organ and cross relic that were taken over from the old church . The Madonna was created by the Hildesheim artist Fürstenberg in 1954, while the organ was made in 1913 by the Duderstadt organ builder Krell. Since November 1st, 2014 the church belongs to the parish “St. Sebastian ”based in Rhumspringe .

organ

The organ was made in 1913 by master organ builder Krell from Duderstadt. It comes from the previous church and has been incorporated into the new church building with a new, modern prospectus. It has 21 stops on 2 manuals and a pedal.

Ev-luth. Holy Spirit Church

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit is only ten years older than the construction of the Catholic Church of St. John Baptist . It was built in 1959 and is a brightly plastered building, which is faced with limestone clinker in places . The rectangular windows and the saddle roof suggest a residential building rather than a place of worship, only the two-winged bronze door and the west tower indicate a church. The interior is from the time the church was built.

Further

  • in the center there is a village square with a fountain
  • Memorial stones for those who died in the local wars and for former civil and prisoners of war
  • Monument woman with reef
  • A large sandstone cross, which is located at the former church of Ankerode, as a reminder of the deserted village, and is used as a pilgrimage site for the community.

Economy and Infrastructure

The rural way of life regulated the everyday life of the inhabitants until after the Second World War . In addition to the farms, the village artisans also owned some parcels of land and meadows which they worked on. Over time, however, many turned to the building trade in the previous century and found attitudes in the surrounding large cities. A specialty in Hilkerode was the outpatient trade in textiles. Initially with the reef , a wooden support frame, later with a covered wagon and since the 1930s with the car, the merchants carried their goods to the north German, Mecklenburg area. The local coat of arms, in which a reef is depicted, indicates this past. Over time, however, a structural change also took place in Hilkerode. The old village handicraft businesses gradually disappeared and the number of people employed there declined. The old businesses were replaced by new, modern craft businesses, so that today a large part of the working residents are employed as skilled craftsmen or in other professions.

traffic

Hilkerode is on the state road 530 between Breitenberg and Rhumspringe . The Bleicherode – Herzberg railway with a train station in the village has now been closed.
