The Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park is a 858  km² nature park in Thuringia , which was temporarily secured on March 16, 1990 by the GDR National Park Program and finally established by ordinance of November 30, 2011 , which touches the Hessian border in the west . Previously, the area was one of eight national natural landscapes and was initiated as such in 1990 by conservationists and local residents.

The nature park combines the western and northwestern peripheral areas of the Thuringian Basin between Eisenach and Heiligenstadt to form a protected area and contains parts of the Eichsfeld , Hainich and Werra valley. Around 70,000 people live in 106 localities within the park, which includes the Hainich National Park .

The Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werra Valley Nature Park includes the Eichsfeld plateaus , the Hainich hills and parts of the Werra Valley. The Werra , which rises in the Thuringian Forest and in Hann. Münden flows together with the Fulda to the Weser . The landscape of the Hainich presents itself with its many high elevations and forests, that of the Eichsfeld with its frequent occurrences of limestone plateaus and forest areas.

The Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park contains rare biotopes and offers a wide range of opportunities for nature observation.

The Lengenberg nature reserve has the largest yew tree in Thuringia. The Teufelskanzel is a massive sandstone rock with an attached mountain restaurant at 452  m above sea level. NN high point of the Höheberg (max. 510.7  m above sea  level ). From the rock there is a view especially towards Hesse on the Werraschleife with the villages Lindewerra (Thuringia) and Oberrieden , to Hohen Meißner and Bilstein and past Ludwigstein Castle to Wendershausen , which is located on the river .

The Lutter waterfall is located near Großbartloff and is impressive at a height of 10 m. For example, the at Dieterode located Dieter Barren cliffs , the panoramic view from the Obereichsfeld, nature leads trail of the nature park over. The limestone grass growing there and the juniper heaths create a real mountain feeling. The Gobert with the highest elevation of the Eichsfeld and at the same time the nature park, the Goburg ( 543.4  m above sea level ), the signposted hiking trails and its species-rich flora, is one of the most beautiful hiking areas in the Eichsfeld.

The Heldrastein near Heldra is considered the king of the Werra Valley, from the tower of the unit you can enjoy an excellent view of the Thuringian nature park. The wasteland of the former inner-German border is called the Green Belt Germany , which delimits the nature park to the west . The aim is to leave the former areas of the German-German border untouched for the benefit of nature, so that endangered animal and plant species can multiply and live in a largely natural environment.

The Probsteizella nature reserve has the Falkener Klippen, a breathtakingly steep rock face that extends all the way to the banks of the Werra. The canyon-like breakthrough valley of the Werra between Creuzburg and Falken was only formed in the last 3 million years.

Architectural monuments

The region has a large number of important architectural monuments and historical testimonies. The Castle Hanstein was first mentioned in the 9th century for the first time and perched above the town Bornhagen . Particularly noteworthy is the so-called “two castles view”, the view from Wendershausen in Hesse past Ludwigstein Castle in Hesse to Hanstein Castle in Thuringia. Other important castles and fortresses are Normannstein Castle near Treffurt, the Haineck Castle ruins near Nazza, Bischofstein Castle in Lengenfeld unterm Stein, Gleichenstein Castle near waxedt. The Hülfensberg monastery is the most important place of pilgrimage in southern Eichsfeld.

A former watchtower of the GDR border fortifications is located on the Tellberg as a “memorial”.

Nature park exhibitions

Fürstenhagen railway water tower

The nature park center in Fürstenhagen is located in the former Fürstenhagen train station. In the information center in the old railway water tower , the landscapes of the region and the concept of the nature park are presented on four floors. There are permanent exhibitions on the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park in the Creuzburger Gottesackerkirche and in the Treffurt Tourist Information Office.
