Tower of unity
The tower of the unit is a 30 m high observation tower and former radar tower at 503.8 m above sea level. NHN high Heldrastein near Schnellmannshausen , a district of Treffurt in the Wartburg district in Thuringia , right on the border with Hesse .
The tower was built in 1962 as an open steel lattice tower with a radar system on top. Although it is actually free-standing, it is additionally secured by guy ropes. The Heldrastein area was not open to the public at that time, as it was located in the inner-German border area .
When the border was opened at the end of 1989, the desire arose to build a lookout tower again on the Heldrastein, after a stone -built tower , the Carl-Alexander-Turm , had been there up until 1952 . Finally, in 1996, permission was given to convert the radar tower into an observation tower. In the course of this renovation, which cost 205,000 DM and was financed by sponsors, the radome on the top of the tower was cut off and the open steel structure was paneled with wood. The tower also received a staircase with 166 steps and an octagonal shelter at the base of the tower.
