The Probsteizella nature reserve, designated on March 23, 1961, is located at the Probsteizella farm of the same name in the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werra Valley Nature Park in the north of the Wartburg district between the towns of Falken and Frankenroda along the Werra .

nature

Today it has a total area of 26.9 hectares and has the registration number 27 in the list of Thuringian nature reserves in the Wartburg district.

The deep river indentation shows the entire stratigraphic sequence of the shell limestone between the wave limestone sequence in the valley floor via anhydite sequence in the upper slope and the main shell limestone sequence on the mountain plateau. The rock slope, shaped by progressive erosion, often shows rockfalls, so caution is always advised when driving on the road that runs along the steep slope, a section of the Werra Valley cycle path .

As early as the Middle Ages, the Falkener Klippen area in the center of the nature reserve was an imposing landmark with rugged rock faces up to 50 meters high. The farmer's pulpit is located below Probsteizella - a prominent rocky promontory on which people were asked to take part in the peasant war in 1525 .

The almost completely forested area is predominantly covered with orchid beech forest. The very steep western slope wearing Blue Grass Buchenwald, on the edge of rock with heat-loving skirt communities and cotoneaster -Gebüsch. Below the rocks, the forest is reminiscent of an ash-maple-Schatthangwald ("gorge forest"). Rare, heat-loving plant species such as B. Swallowwort , peach-leaved bellflower , blood-red cranesbill and ostrich-flowered usury . The forest is rich in whitebeams and service berries , including the rare small species of pointed whitebeam ( Sorbus acutisecta ). In some years the eagle owl breeds in the rock face .
